Sherman (2g) Leads Southern Maine Past Nichols

            BURRILLVILLE, R.I. – Freshman Cassandra Sherman (North Smithfield, R.I.) scored two goals, including the game-winning goal, to lead the University of Southern Maine Huskies past the Nichols College Bison, 5-1, in ECAC Women's East play Friday evening at Levy Rink.

            The win snapped a four-game (0-2-2) winless streak for the Huskies, and leveled their overall record at 2-2-2.  The Huskies improved to 2-1-2 in league play.  The Bison dropped their fourth straight decision to slip to 2-6-0 overall and 0-5-0 in ECAC East games.

            Sherman snapped a 1-1 tie with her first collegiate goal at 7:26 of the second period finishing off a set up from junior Erin Banfield (Montpelier, Vt.) and sophomore Maggie Lane (Burlington, Mass.).  Sherman would tally her second goal of the game at 9:53 of the third period, assisted by junior Brittany Soar (Boxborough, Mass.) and senior Katie Davis (Woburn, Mass.), to give the Huskies a 3-1 advantage.

            Banfield added a short-handed goal at 15:58, assisted by sophomore Katelyn Ladd (Billerica, Mass.), and sophomore Talya Bent (Cranston, R.I.) tallied the final goal with 50 seconds to play assisted by Soar and senior Alex Smith (Winthrop, Mass.).

            Southern Maine grabbed a 1-0 lead in the opening period when sophomore Julia Pearl (Essex Jct., Vt.) netted her second goal of the season off an assist from senior Kailey Bubier (Auburn, Maine) at 5:11.

            Sophomore Megan Gerein (Dubuque, Iowa) beat Bergstrom on a breakaway at 6:27 of the second period to tie the score for the Bison.  The tie lasted just 59 seconds before Sherman found the net.

            Sophomore Liz Bergstrom (Chanhassen, Minn.) finished the evening making 22 saves in the Huskies net to pick up her second win of the season.  Rookie netminder Nia Lelly (Cary, N.C.) registered 28 saves for the Bison.

            Despite being outshot in the opening period, Southern Maine finished the game with a 33-23 advantage in shots on goal.

            Southern Maine travels to Stamford, Conn., on Saturday (11:30 a.m.) to play 8th-ranked Mahattanville College in an ECAC East game.  Nichols will host Plymouth State University on Saturday (7:40 p.m.).
