WORCESTER, Mass. – Freshman Megan Shepard (Middletown, Conn./Waterford) earned a 4-6, 6-3, 6-1 win at third singles to propel the Worcester State University Lancers to a 5-4 win over the University of Southern Maine Huskies in a Little East Conference women's tennis match Saturday afternoon in Worcester, Mass.
With the win, Worcester State improves to 5-7 overall and 1-5 in the Little East Conference. Southern Maine falls to 7-8 overall and 2-6 in the Little East.
Trailing 2-1 after doubles, Worcester State won four out of six singles matches and Shepard defeated USM freshman Courtney Aldrich (Lewiston, Maine) in a tightly contested match to complete the Lancer comeback.
USM juniors Mary Moran (Windham, Maine/Portland) and Emily Boutin (Old Town, Maine) earned both of the Huskies' points in singles action. Moran defeated Danielle Candelieri (Chelmsford, Mass.) 7-5 and 6-1 and first singles. Boutin downed sophomore Taylor Tomasetti (Waterford, Conn.) 6-2 and 6-1. Both Moran and Boutin earned an 8-4 win over Candlreri and Tomasetti at first doubles.
Southern Maine will await its pairing for the 2012 Little East Conference Championships. The top six teams advance. Worcester State faces UMass Boston on Sunday (12:00 p.m.).
