PORTLAND, Maine -- The visiting University of Maine Fort Kent Bengals scored three times in the opening 23 minutes en route to a 3-0 victory over the University of Southern Maine Huskies in a non-conference women's soccer match Thursday afternoon at Fitzpatrick Stadium.

            The Bengals picked up their first win of the season and remain unbeaten through their first two matches (1-0-1).  The match was the season opener for the Huskies.

            Senior Whitney Sinclair (Dexter, Maine) gave the Bengals a 1-0 lead in the ninth minute collecting a loose ball in front of the USM goal and putting a shot past senior goalkeeper Kat Rothe (Leeds, Maine/Leavitt Area).  The goal was Sinclair's the second of the season.

            Five minutes later, junior Theresa Biggs (Cape Town, South Africa) doubled the lead heading home a corner kick delivered by sophomore Victoria Dubois-Iredale (Montreal, Quebec).  Junior Donike Ferriera (Montego Bay, Jamaica) added the third goal, off an assist from Sinclair, in the 23rd minute with a shot over Rothe from outside the 18-yard box.

            UMFK freshman goalkeeper Sydney Proctor (Saco, Maine) was credited with two stops to earn her first collegiate shutout.  Rothe finished with five saves.  UMFK out shot USM 14-2 and held a 5-2 edge in corner kicks.

            Southern Maine returns to action Saturday (1:45 p.m.) at Memorial Field in Portland hosting Gordon College.  UMaine Fort Kent travels to Amherst, N.Y., this weekend to play Muskingum University on Saturday (1:00 p.m.) and the University of Rio Grande on Sunday (2:30 p.m.).
