WATERVILLE, Maine -- Freshmen Corey Dyke (Monmouth, Maine/Monmouth Academy) and Cassidy Alex (Belfast, Maine), along with sophomores Christopher M. Ross (Winthrop, Maine/Ipswich [Mass.]) and Ryan Boucher (Lewiston, Maine/Berwick Academy), were double winners to lead the visiting University of Southern Maine Huskies to a 6-3 win over the Thomas College Terriers in a non-conference men's tennis match Tuesday afternoon.
With the win, Southern Maine improves its overall record to 3-2. The loss was the fourth straight for the Terriers who fall to 1-4.
After dropping an 8-2 decision at first doubles, the Huskies earned points as Dyke and Boucher combined at second doubles, and Ross and Alex teamed up at third doubles, to take a 2-1 lead. Dyke and Boucher defeated the Thomas tandem of senior Michael Morris (Boston, Mass./The Newman School) and junior Keith Pike (Berwick, Maine/Marshwood) 8-0. Ross and Alex downed Terrier juniors Jesse Peasley (North Berwick, Maine/Noble) and Mathew Bolstridge (Berwick, Maine/Noble) 8-2.
Dyke, Boucher, Ross and Alex swept the three through six singles points to secure the victory. Dyke was dominant in his win over Pike a third singles with a convincing 6-0, 6-0 decision.
Southern Maine opens its Little East Conference schedule when it travels to Rhode Island College on Saturday (1:00 p.m.). Thomas College hosts Castleton State College on Saturday (1:00 p.m.) in a North Atlantic Conference tilt.
