Southern Maine Slips Past Salem State 5-4

GORHAM, Maine – Freshman Corey Dyke (Monmouth, Maine/Monmouth Academy) won a key match at six singles to lift the University of Southern Maine Huskies to a 5-4 win over the Salem State University Vikings in a Little East Conference men's tennis match Wednesday afternoon at the Costello Sports Complex in Gorham, Maine.

            With the win, Southern Maine improves to 7-5 overall and 2-3 in the Little East.  The Vikings fall to 1-9 and 1-4 in the conference.

            Dyke defeated Vikings' Krystan Doibul 6-2, 6-4 in a critical point for the Huskies.  Dyke also earned an 8-3 win at third doubles along with classmate Chris G. Ross (Somerset, Mass.).  Dyke and Ross defeated the Salem State team of senior Shawn Dowen (Hudson, Mass.) and freshman Elgis Bizhoti (Dorchester, Mass./Another Course to College High School). 

            Junior Matt Larson (Cape Elizabeth, Maine/Profile) and senior captain Mike Sarrazin (Lewiston, Maine) also scored points for the Huskies in singles action.  Larson earned a 6-2, 6-3 at no. 2 singles while Sarrazin picked up a hard-won 6-4, 6-2 at fourth singles.

            Southern Maine hosts UMass Boston on Saturday (1:00 p.m.).  Salem State hosts UMass Dartmouth (12:00 p.m.) on the same date.
