GORHAM, Maine -- Senior Michael Sarrazin (Lewiston, Maine) and junior Matt Larson (Cape Elizabeth, Maine/Profile) earned an 8-6 win at first doubles to lead the University of Southern Maine Huskies to a sweep of the three doubles points en route to an 8-1 win over the Bridgewater State University Bears in a Little East Conference men's tennis match Tuesday afternoon at the Costello Sports Complex.
With the win, Southern Maine improved to 6-4 overall and earned its first LEC win to stand at 1-2. Bridgewater State dropped to 6-5 and 2-2 in the conference.
Sarrazin and Larson started the Huskies off on the right foot defeating the Bears' tandem of senior David Campbell (Vineyard Haven, Mass./Martha's Vineyard) and junior Mike Zagame (Uxbrigde, Mass./Dennis-Yarmouth Regional).
Ahead 3-0 after doubles play, the Huskies won five of six singles matches to secure the victory. Senior Zach Caron (North Conway, N.H./Kennett) earned at 7-6 (4), 6-2 win over Campbell in the top singles match, and the Huskies earned victories at the number 3 through 6 positions. Zagame scored the lone point of the match for the Bears defeating Larson 7-5, 0-6, 10-7 at second singles.
Southern Maine travels to the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth on Saturday (12:00 p.m.). Bridgewater State hosts Curry College on Thursday (3:00 p.m.).
