Western Connecticut Downs Southern Maine 8-1

            DANBURY, Conn. -- The Western Connecticut State University Colonials men's tennis team won its second straight Little East Conference match defeating the University of Southern Maine Huskies 8-1 Saturday afternoon at the Westside Courts.

            With the win, Western Connecticut improves to 4-2 overall and 2-1 in the Little East.  Southern Maine falls to 5-4 and remains winless in the LEC at 0-2.

            Despite near freezing temperatures, the Colonials came out red hot, racing out to a 3-0 advantage after the doubles competition. Junior Troy Pandolfi (Danbury, Conn.) and senior John Philips (Hartford, Conn./Northwest Catholic) led the Colonials at the top of the order with an 8-4 win over Southern Maine senior Michael Sarrazin (Lewiston, Maine) and junior Matt Larson (Cape Elizabeth, Maine/Profile).

            Pandolfi continued in singles action cruising to a 6-0, 6-0 win at first singles over senior Zach Caron (North Conway, N.H./Kennett), while Phillips downed Larson 6-4, 6-1 at number two.

            Junior Austin Werner (Fairfield, Conn./Fairfield-Warde) and freshman Ryan Klem (Newport, R.I./) won their matches at third and sixth singles, respectively.

            Sarrazin scored the lone point of the match for the Huskies when he defeated senior Andrew Kelley (Weston, Conn./Canterbury School) 6-5, 5-7 (10-6).

            Southern Maine hosts Bridgewater State University on Tuesday (3:30 p.m.) for an LEC match.  Western Connecticut travels to Rutgers-Newark for a non-league match on Thursday (4:00 p.m.).
