GORHAM, Maine -- Freshmen Corey Dyke (Monmouth, Maine/Monmouth Academy) and Chris G. Ross (Somerset, Mass.) earned an 8-4 victory at first doubles to spearhead an 8-1 win for the University of Southern Maine Huskies over the Thomas College Terriers in a non-conference men's tennis match Wednesday. Due to weather conditions, the match was played indoors at the Costello Sports Complex.
With its second straight win, Southern Maine improves to 5-3 overall. The Terriers fall to 2-6 with the loss.
Dyke and Ross, played up two spots in the lineup for the Huskies, defeated the Thomas tandem of seniors Andre Giguere (Waterville, Maine) and Mike Morris (Boston, Mass./The Newman School). Normally, the Huskies third doubles team, Dyke and Ross improved their doubles record to 5-2 overall.
The Huskies swept the three doubles points from the Terriers to head into singles action with a 3-0 lead. Southern Maine won five out of six singles matches for the 8-1 final. Junior Matt Larson (Cape Elizabeth, Maine/Profile) defeated Giguere 6-3, 6-3 at the top of the order, while Ross, playing up from his regular fifth spot, defeated Morris 6-1, 6-0 at second singles.
Thomas junior Keith Pike (Berwick, Maine/Marshwood) scored the lone point for the Terriers at sixth singles defeating USM freshman Alex Smelcer (Westport, Maine/Wiscasset) in a tightly contested match 7-6 (1), 7-6 (2).
Southern Maine travels to Western Connecticut State University on Saturday (12:00 p.m.) for a Little East Conference match. Thomas travels to Johnson State College on Saturday (1:00 p.m.) for a North Atlantic Conference match.
