Top-Seeded Norwich Ends #6 Southern Maine Dreams 4-0

Box Score

NORTHFIELD, Vt. -- Sophomore Scott Schroeder (Drake, Saskatchewan) had a goal and two assists to lead the top-seeded Norwich University Cadets to a 4-0 victory over the sixth-seeded University of Southern Maine Huskies Friday in the first semifinal game of the 2011 ECAC (Eastern College Athletic Conference) Men's East Championship Tournament at Kreitzberg Arena.

The win extends the Cadets unbeaten string to 11 games (9-0-2) and improves their overall record to 19-5-3.  The Cadets, tied for second in this week's USCHO.com Division III national poll, will play the winner of the second semifinal between second-seeded Castleton State College and fifth-seeded Babson College.  The Huskies, who advanced to the semifinals for the first time since 2006 with a 4-1 upset win over third-seeded University of Massachusetts Boston last weekend, finish their season 8-13-5 overall.

Schroeder potted his 18th goal of the season at 8:17 of the opening period to give the Cadets the lead.  Schroeder tipped a shot from classmate Blake Forkey (Boca Raton, Fla.) past USM rookie netminder Braely Torris (Eckville, Alberta).

Sophomore Troy Allan (Davidson, Saskatchewan) doubled the home side's advantage at 14:42 of the second period converting a breakaway off a pass from senior Greg Eskedjian (Barrie, Ontario).

The Cadets put the game away in the final five minutes of play with goals from rookies Frank Gatien (Boucherville, Quebec) and Travis Janke (Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan).  Schroeder picked up an assist on both goals.

Norwich freshman goalie Parker Carroll (West Chester, Penn.) stopped all 15 shots he faced to record his fourth shutout of the season.

Torris, an ECAC Men's East all-rookie team selection, stopped 39 shots for the Huskies to finish the season with school single-season records of 754 saves and .917 save percentage.  He broke the single-season save mark set by Andrew Dargan in the 1998-99 season, and the save percentage record established by Jamie Gilbert in 2007-08.
