GORHAM, Maine -- Senior Zach Caron (North Conway, N.H./Kennett) won three out of his four matches to lead the University of Southern Maine Huskies to a split of a pair of non-conference men's tennis matches Sunday at the Costello Sports Complex.
The Huskies defeated the Johnson State College Badgers 8-1 in their first match of the day before falling to the Endicott College Gulls, 7-2, in the second match. With the split, Southern Maine is 2-2 overall. Johnson State is 1-1 and Endicott remains undefeated at 3-0.
In the opening match, the Huskies swept all three doubles points, and then earned two quick wins at singles to seal the victory over the Badgers. Caron led the way for the Huskies with a 6-0, 6-1 win at the top of the order over Johnson State junior Ryan Joy (North Montpelier, Vt./Union-32). Caron teamed up with junior Matt Larson (Cape Elizabeth, Maine/Profile) in doubles action to take an 8-4 win at first doubles.
In the second match, Endicott swept all three doubles points and took four of six singles points to come away with the win. Junior Porter Williams (Raleigh, N.C./The Harvey School) and sophomore Jake Cohen (Barrington, R.I.) secured the doubles sweep for the Gulls fighting their way to a 9-8 (5) win at third doubles over USM freshmen Corey Dyke (Monmouth, Maine/Monmouth Academy) and Christopher G. Ross (Somerset, Mass.).
Southern Maine returns to action on April 5 (3:30 p.m.) at Thomas College.
