Castleton State Downs Southern Maine 10-4

            CASTLETON, Vt. -- Tied 3-3 at halftime, Castleton State College scored five-straight goals in the third period to defeat the University of Southern Maine, 10-4, in non-conference men's lacrosse action at Spartan Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

            The Spartans picked up their first win of the season, and the first victory for first-year head coach Brian Kingsbury, to improve to 1-4 overall. The Huskies had their two-game winning streak snapped and fall to 2-3 on the season.

            Sophomore attackman Nohea King (St. Albans, Vt.) and sophomore midfielder Adam Groot (Canadaigua, N.Y.) led Castleton's offense with two goals each on the afternoon.  Freshman Alex Green (Braintree, Vt./Randolph Union) led the Spartans in assists with three while King dished out two.  Junior goalie Dave DeGhetto (Clifton, N.J.) recorded 14 saves.

            For Southern Maine, senior attackman Tim Bryant (Peterborough, N.H.) and junior midfielder Kayle Hamilton (Buxton, Maine) scored two goals each in the loss.  Senior Tyler Joseph (Hancock, N.H.) and sophomore Marc Stannard (Wilder, Vt.) both had assists.  Junior goalie Kyle Dussault (Lewiston, Maine) stopped 10 shots.

            Castleton grabbed a 2-0 lead on goals by freshman Jake Krantz (Franklin Lakes, N.J.) and King in the opening 11 minutes before Hamilton cut the deficit in half with a minute to play in the quarter.

            Bryant tied the score early in the second quarter, then gave the Huskies their only lead of the game with his second goal 7:56 before halftime.  Sophomore Kenneth Bourneuf (Waterbury, Vt./Harwood Union) got the Spartans even with 1:45 remaining in the quarter.

            The third quarter proved decisive for the Spartans as they scored five unanswered goals.  Freshman Will Stuhler (Madison, N.J.) gave the Spartans the lead for good with a goal three minutes into the third quarter.  The Spartans blew the game open in the final four minutes of the period getting goals from sophomore Sam Bailey (Hartford, Vt.), King, sophomore Brian McCarthy (Johnson, Vt./Lamoille Union) and Groot.

            Groot and Green extended the run of Spartan goals to seven in the fourth quarter before Hamilton snapped the run with his second goal with one second to play.

            Castleton won the faceoff match up winning 9 of 15, went 17-27 in clears and picked up 46 ground balls.  Southern Maine had the lone man-up goal (in six attempts), was 12-for 26 in clears and had 28 ground balls.

            The Huskies will host Bates College on Tuesday (7:00 p.m.) at Memorial Field in Portland.  The Spartans return to action on Wednesday (4:00 p.m.) at home against Norwich University.
