Torris (60 Saves), #6 Southern Maine Upsets #3 UMass Boston 4-1

Box Score

BOSTON -- Freshman goaltender Braely Torris (Eckville, Alberta) stopped 60 of 61 shots as the sixth-seeded University of Southern Maine Huskies upset the third-seeded University of Massachusetts Boston Beacons, 4-1, in a first round game of the 2011 ECAC (Eastern College Athletic Conference) Men's East tournament Saturday evening at the Clark Athletic Center.

Torris' 60 saves was one shy of the school record set by Chris Buck against Norwich University on October 28, 1988.  Torris had 39 saves through the first two periods, and carried his bid for a shutout late into the third period before UMB senior Eric Tufman (Abington, Pa.) got the Beacons on the board.

The teams played a scoreless first period as Torris kicked out 22 shots.  Southern Maine broke the scoreless deadlock at 1:56 of the second period when sophomore David Nies (Brookline, Mass.) tallied his seventh goal of the season.  Senior Zach Joy (Dover, N.H.) scored what proved to be the game-winning goal at 17:20, assisted by classmates Jon Rutt (Scarborough, Maine) and Paul Conter (Woodbridge, Ontario).  The goal was Joy's team-leading 11th of the season.

Junior Dan Rautenberg (Cape Elizabeth, Maine) potted an unassisted goal at 8:53 of the third period to give the Huskies a 3-0 lead.  After Tufman broke up Torris' bid for his third shutout of the season at 14:20 with his 11th goal, the Beacons pulled senior netminder Thomas Speer (Wausau, Wis.) for the extra attacker.  Conter ended any hopes of a comeback with an empty-net goal at 18:34.

The win improved the Huskies overall record to 8-12-5 (4-1-2 in the month of February) and advanced them into the semifinal round of the tournament for the first time since 2006.  The Beacons end their season 15-11 overall.
