WATERVILLE, Maine -- Colby College men's ice hockey head coach Stan Moore earned his first victory and goalie junior Matt Delaney (Houston, Texas) earned his first collegiate victory thanks to a four-goal third period outburst as the Mules defeated the University of Southern Maine Huskies, 7-4, in a non-conference game Tuesday night at Alfond Rink.
Moore, who took over the Colby program after long time head coach Jim Tortorella moved on to the University of New Hampshire, was on the winning side for the first time after dropping one-goal decisions to Middlebury and Williams this past weekend.
The Huskies, who out shot the Mules 39-28, dropped their fourth straight game to slide to 1-4.
Southern Maine tied the game at 3-3 early in the third period on a power-play goal from freshman Sam Guimond (Portland, Maine) before Colby exploded for four straight goals.
Senior Michael Doherty (Lynnfield, Mass.) put the Mules up for good at 3:48 of the final period off the first of two assists from junior Scott Harff (Watertown, N.Y.). Sophomore Ben Chwick (Purchase, N.Y.) scored just 24 seconds later from classmates Nick Lanza (Rocky Hill, Conn.) and Brendan Cosgrove (Exeter, N.H.). Harff and junior Spike Smigelski (Mountain Lakes, N.J.) assisted on junior Cory McGrath's (Yarmouthport, Mass.) goal at 10:50 for a 6-3 lead, and sophomore Jack Bartlett (Lynn, Mass.) closed out Colby's scoring outburst at 17:20.
Junior Shane Harvey (Fort McMurray, Alberta) and freshmen Brad McGovern (Haverhill, Mass.), Guimond, and Ben Pearl (Essex, Vt.) scored for the Huskies, who were tied 2-2 after one period, and trailed just 3-2 after two periods.
Wheeler stopped 35 shots to collect his first career win. USM senior Mason St. Hilaire (Saco, Maine), making his first start of the season, had 21 saves.
Southern Maine is off until December 2 (7:00 p.m.) when it hosts the University of Massachusetts Boston for an ECAC Men's East encounter. Colby will host the USA U-18 team on Saturday (4:30 p.m.) as part of the Bowdoin/Colby Tournament.
