Second-Ranked Norwich Downs Southern Maine 5-1

Box Score

GORHAM, Maine -- Junior Pier-Olivier Cotnoir (Rouyn-Noranda, Quebec) scored two goals to lead the second-ranked Norwich University Cadets to a 5-1 victory over the University of Southern Maine Huskies in an ECAC Men's East game Saturday afternoon at the USM Ice Arena.

The win gives the Cadets a sweep of their weekend trip to Maine.  The Cadets defeated the University of New England, 7-4, on Friday night, and are now 2-0-0 overall and in league play.  The Huskies dropped their third straight game to slip to 1-3-0 overall and in the league.  The two teams will meet again at Norwich on January 27.

Sophomore Travis Janke (Swift Current, Sask.) picked up three assists, and junior Kyle Thomas (Waltham, Mass.) had what proved to be the game-winning goal and an assist for the Cadets.  Sophomore Shane Gorman (Trumbull, Conn.) and rookie Chris Duszynski (Okotoks, Alberta) had the other goals.  Sophomore goalie Parker Carroll (West Chester, Pa.) stopped 16 of 17 shots in the cage.

Senior Dan Rautenberg (Cape Elizabeth, Maine) had the Huskies' lone goal of the game, set up by junior Jon Grandinetti (Ottawa, Ontario) and freshman Ryan Seward (Port Jefferson, N.Y.).  Sophomore goaltender Braely Torris (Eckville, Alberta) finished with 36 saves.

Norwich had a decided 41-17 edge in shots on goal, and finished 3 for 11 on the power play.

Cotnoir put the Cadets on top to stay in the opening minute of play when he walked in and snapped a 20-foot shot inside the far-side post from the left wing circle.  Thomas tallied the Cadets first power-play marker at the 10:50 mark to make it 2-0.

Rautenberg gave the Huskies a spark when he beat Carroll at the 2:57 mark of the second period.  Duszynski snuff out the spark 31 seconds later when his shot squeezed past Torris.  Gorman scored a power-play goal at 8:47, and Cotnoir closed the scoring with his second goal of the game, power-play tally, at 19:42.

There was no scoring in the third period as Torris stopped all 15 shots he faced.  Carroll made seven stops in the final period.

Southern Maine is off until November 22 when it travels to Colby College for a non-league game.  Norwich returns home next weekend to host New England College on Friday (7:00 p.m.) and Saint Anselm College on Saturday (4:00 p.m.).
