Hamilton Makes Early Lead Stand, Downs USM 3-1

Box Score

GORHAM, Maine -- Freshman Nick Anderson (Port Coguitlam, B.C.) and senior Joe Buicko (Altamont, N.Y.) each had a goal and an assist as the Hamilton College Continentals defeated the University of Southern Maine Huskies, 3-1, Friday night in an ECAC Men's East-NESCAC interleague game at the USM Ice Arena.

The victory snapped a two-game losing streak for the Continentals, and improved their record to 9-6-2 overall and 6-4-2 in league games.  The Huskies, winless in their last eight games (0-6-2), slide to 4-10-3 overall and 2-9-1 in the league.

Anderson potted what proved to be the game-winning goal when he tapped home the rebound of a shot from rookie Michael DiMare (Medford, Mass.) for his 10th goal of the season.  Buicko earned the second assist.  Anderson picked up an assist on freshman Evan Haney's (Sainte-Marthe, Quebec) first period goal.

Buicko clinched the win for the visitors with an unassisted empty-net goal with 53 seconds remaining in the third period.

Southern Maine, trailing 2-0 in the third period, finally solved the goaltending of Hamilton senior Scott Hefferman (Warwick, R.I.) midway through the third period.  Sophomore Craig Perham (Arundel, Maine) scored when his play from below the goal line hit Hefferman and deflected into the net at 9:35.  Senior Paul Conter (Woodbridge, Ontario) and junior Dan Rautenberg (Cape Elizabeth, Maine) got credit for the assists.

Hefferman held the fort the rest of the way to register his ninth win of the season.  He finished with 23 saves.  USM freshman Braely Torris (Eckville, Alberta) finished with 27 saves before being lifted for the extra attacker.

Southern Maine returns to action Saturday afternoon (4:00 p.m.) hosting Amherst College.  Hamilton continues its weekend road trip Saturday (3:00 p.m.) visiting the University of New England.
