Southern Maine, Babson Skate to 2-2 Tie

Box Score

BABSON PARK, Mass. -- Freshman goaltender Braely Torris (Eckville, Alberta) stopped 40 shots to help the visiting University of Southern Maine Huskies men's ice hockey preserve a 2-2 overtime tie with the Babson College Beavers in an ECAC (Eastern College Athletic Conference) Men's East game Saturday afternoon at the Babson Skating Rink.

The tie leaves the Huskies with a 4-9-3 overall record, and a 2-8-1 mark in league play.  The Beavers are 8-7-1 overall and 6-4-1 in league play.

Torris was strong throughout the game, and made 30 of his saves over the final two periods and the five-minute overtime as the Beavers piled up a 30-14 advantage in shots.  The Beavers out shot the Huskies 42-32 for the game.

Babson took a 1-0 lead on a power-play goal by sophomore PT Donato (Arlington, Mass.) at 15:56 of the opening period.  The lead lasted just 41 seconds as USM freshman Troy Thibodeau (Danvers, Mass.) netted his first collegiate goal off assists from seniors Paul Conter (Woodbridge, Ontario) and Mike Carpenter (Minot, Maine).

The teams skated through a scoreless second period that saw the Beavers pile up a 14-9 edge in shots on target.

It would be the Huskies who would break the scoring drought, taking a 2-1 lead early in the third period when freshman Mike Greene (Arvada, Colo.) scored an unassisted goal at 1:17.  Just under five minutes later, the Beavers got the equalizer when rookie Matt O'Neill (Norwell, Mass.) scored a power-play goal.

After the O'Neill goal, Torris and Babson second-year goalie Zeke Testa (Wellesley, Mass.) turned aside every shot they faced.  Testa finished the game registering 30 saves, 17 coming in the opening period.

Southern Maine returns home next weekend to host Hamilton College on Friday (7:00 p.m.) and Amherst College on Saturday (4:00 p.m.).  Babson travels to Vermont to play at Saint Michael's College on Friday (7:00 p.m.) and Norwich University on Saturday (4:00 p.m.).
