Southern Maine Falls in Overtime to UMass Boston 5-4

Box Score

BOSTON -- Junior Chris Wyman (Bartlett, Ill.) scored the game-winning goal at 2:17 of overtime to give the University of Massachusetts Boston a 5-4 victory over the University of Southern Maine in an ECAC (Eastern College Athletic Conference) Men's East game Friday evening at the Clark Athletic Center Rink.

The win was the third straight, and fifth in the last six games, for the Beacons, and improved their record to 12-4-0 overall and 7-3-0 in the league.  The Huskies dropped their fifth straight game to fall to 4-9-2 overall and 2-8-0 in league games.

Wyman's game-winning tally ruined the Huskies' bid to come from behind to earn a win.  The Huskies rallied three times in the game to tie the score, the final time when senior Jon Rutt (Scarborough, Maine) lit the lamp at 3:16 of the third period for his sixth goal of the season.  Junior Dan Rautenberg (Cape Elizabeth, Maine) and senior Paul Conter (Woodbridge, Ontario) earned the assists on the power-play marker.

Senior Vinnie Jacona (East Stroudsburg, Pa.) potted the lone goal of the opening period at 1:52, set up by junior Bryan Albert (Redlands, Calif.).

Sophomore John Grandinetti (Ottawa, Ontario) tied the score with his first goal as a Husky at 2:03 of the second period.  The tie lasted just 45 seconds as UMB sophomore Michael Crowder (Flint, Mich.) scored his first goal.  Jacona scored his second goal of the game, and eighth of the season, at 3:55 to give the Beacons a 3-1 advantage.

The Huskies received a pair of goals from freshman Mike Greene (Arvada, Colo.) and senior Zach Joy (Dover, N.H.) within a span of 1:15 midway through the period to tie the game at 3-3.  Albert, who finished with three points, restored the Beacons' lead with five seconds left in the second period.

Junior Mason St. Hilaire (Saco, Maine), making his first start in goal for the Huskies since opening night, registered 37 saves.  Junior Kevin Bendel (Denville, N.J.) also stopped 37 shots for the Beacons to run his record to 7-1.

Southern Maine seeks to snap its losing skid Saturday (4:00 p.m.) when it plays at Babson College.  UMass Boston hosts the University of New England on Saturday (4:00 p.m.)
