Box Score SALEM, Mass. -- Senior Zach Joy (Dover, N.H.) scored his second goal of the game 22 seconds into sudden death overtime to give the University of Southern Maine a 5-4 victory over Salem State University in a non-conference men's ice hockey game Thursday night at Rockett Arena.
The win lifts the Huskies' overall record to 3-4-1. The Vikings had a two-game winning streak stopped and fell to 6-2-0.
In overtime, sophomore Ryan Boucher (Lewiston, Maine) forced a turnover in the Salem State end and got the puck to Joy who blasted a shot past senior James Lacour (Silver Springs, Md.) for the game winner.
USM senior defenseman Paul Conter (Woodbridge, Ontario) sent the game into overtime scoring his second goal of the game with 31 seconds remaining in regulation. With the goalie out in favor of the extra attacker, sophomore Craig Perham (Arundel, Maine) got the puck to Conter who beat Lacour to the stick side.
Salem State grabbed a 2-0 in the first period as juniors Giancarlo Capodanno (Mountainside, N.J.) and Mike Genovese (Hingham, Mass.) found the net 1:40 apart. Capodanno scored an even-strength goal at 6:54 before Genovese potted a short-handed tally at 8:34.
Joy scored his first goal of the game on the same power play 24 seconds after Genovese's short-handed marker.
Conter scored his first goal at 4:04 of the middle period to tie the game at 2-2. Junior Dan Rautenberg (Cape Elizabeth, Maine) gave USM a 3-2 lead at 10:04 when he tallied a short-handed goal. Capodanno equalized for Salem State at 12:36 with his seventh goal of the season.
The game remained tied until the waning minutes of the third period. The Vikings grabbed a 4-3 advantage with 4:54 to play when junior Ian Flanagan (New Hampton, N.H.) lit the lamp, setting the stage for Conter and Joy.
USM rookie goalie Ian Edwards (Linden, Mich.), making his first career start, was credited with 22 saves and the win. Lacour also had 22 saves for Salem State.
Southern Maine completes the first semester portion of its schedule this Saturday (4:00 p.m.) hosting the University of New England. Salem State travels to Worcester State University on Saturday (4:00 p.m.).
