Williams Explodes Past Southern Maine 7-1

            GORHAM, Maine -- The fifth-ranked Williams College men's ice hockey team exploded for five goals in the second period, including three in a span of 1:18, and went on to defeat the University of Southern Maine, 7-1, in an ECAC East-NESCAC inter-league game Saturday at the USM Ice Arena.

            The win extends the unbeaten Ephs record to 6-0-1 overall and 4-0-0 in league play.  The Huskies fall to 2-4-1 overall and 1-3-0 in league games.

            Sophomore Cody Skinner (Katy, Texas) led the second-period onslaught picking up a goal and two assists.  Rookie Bryden McGhee (Calgary, Alberta) had a pair of goals in the game for the Ephs.  Seniors Matt Masucci (Winthrop, Mass.) and Connor Olvany (Wilmette, Ill,) and sophomore Mark Lyons (Calgary, Alberta) each had a goal and an assist in the game.

            After a scoreless first period, McGhee snapped the deadlock with his third goal of the season, assisted be Skinner and Lyons, at 6:15 of the second period.  After USM was whistled for a penalty less than a minute later, sophomore Eric Rubino (Woodbridge, Ontario) made it 2-0 with a power-play goal at 7:40.  The goal was the sixth of the season for Rubino

            The wheels came off for the Huskies late in the period as the Ephs netted three scores in 78 seconds.  Olvany lit the lamp at 17:49.  Masucci found the back of the net off assists from Skinner and senior Justin Guttek (Winnipeg, Manitoba) at 18:57, and Skinner was credited with the goal when his pass from below the goal line caromed past USM freshman goaltender Braely Torris (Eckville, Alberta) at 19:07.

            Lyons and McGhee increased the lead to 7-0 in the opening 5:17 of the third period before USM sophomore Jason Olson (Rutland, Vt.) put the Huskies on the board with his first goal of the season at 10:48.

            Junior goalie Ryan Purdy (La Jolla, Calif.) stopped 31 of 32 shots in the Williams goal to record his sixth win of the season.  Torris had 12 saves in two periods before giving way to classmate Ian Edwards (Linden, Mich.).  Edwards, making his first collegiate appearance, made seven saves in the final period.

            Southern Maine hits the road Thursday (7:00 p.m.) traveling to Salem State University for a non-league game.  Williams will host Nichols College on December 12 (3:00 p.m.) in a non-league contest.
