WORCESTER, Mass. -- The University of Southern Maine women's tennis team swept all nine matches Saturday afternoon to defeat Worcester State University, 9-0, in a Little East Conference match played at the Assumption College courts.
The win was the third straight for the Huskies who improve to 5-4 overall and 2-4 in the conference. The Lancers drop to 4-4 overall and 1-4 in LEC play.
Freshman Rachel Miller (Portland, Maine/Deering) paced the Huskies posting a straight sets victory over senior Ashley Perkins (Worcester, Mass./Doherty) in the number one singles match after teaming with classmate Emily Boutin (Old Town, Maine) for an 8-0 win over sophomores Marissa Boss (Holden, Mass./Wachusett) and Jacqueline Shaw (Uxbridge, Mass.) in the number two doubles contest.
The best match of the day was at number three singles where USM rookie Sarah Moody (Scarborough, Maine) and senior Courteney Blais (Paxton, Mass./Worcester Academy) of Worcester State split sets before Moody took a 10-point tiebreaker, 10-0, to secure the point.
Southern Maine will host Colby-Sawyer College on Wednesday (4:00 p.m.) for a non-conference match. Worcester State will travel to Nichols College on Wednesday (4:00 p.m.).
