GORHAM, Maine -- Junior midfielder Heidi DeHaan (Lewiston, Maine/St. Dominic's) and freshman forward Catherine Wise (Cape Elizabeth, Maine/Cheverus) each scored second-half goals to give the University of Southern Maine a 2-0 victory over the University of Maine at Farmington in non-conference women's soccer action Tuesday afternoon at the USM Soccer Field.
The win was the first of the season for the Huskies and snapped a four-match losing skid. The loss was the second straight for the Beavers who fall back to .500 at 2-2-0.
DeHaan put the Huskies on the board 10 minutes into the second half when she took a pass from senior Samantha Mathieu (Belfast, Maine) on the left-wing side and lifted the ball from a bad angle over UMF junior goalkeeper McKell Barnes (Durham, Maine) and into the far side of the net. The goal was the first of the campaign for DeHaan.
Wise added an insurance marker in the 86th minute when she picked up a loose ball inside the six-yard box and knocked it in for her third goal. Junior Chelsea Norton (Westbrook, Maine) picked up her team-leading third assist of the season.
Senior goalkeeper Alison Bradley (Auckland, New Zealand) posted her first clean sheet of the season for USM making three saves. Barnes finished the match with two stops.
UMF had a slim, 12-11 edge in shots while USM earned a 5-3 margin in corner kicks.
The Huskies open their 2009 Little East Conference schedule on Saturday (1:00 p.m.) when they host the University of Massachusetts Boston. The Beavers travel to Castine, Maine, on Saturday (7:00 p.m.) to play Maine Maritime Academy in their North Atlantic Conference opener.
