Williams Shuts Down Southern Maine 3-1

WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass.  --  Sophomore goalie Ryan Purdy (La Jolla, Calif.) stopped 20 of 21 shots he faced Saturday afternoon to backstop Williams College to a 3-1 win over the University of Southern Maine in an ECAC East-NESCAC interleague men's college ice hockey game.

The win was the third straight for the undefeated Ephs who improve to 5-0-1 overall, 4-0-0 in league play.  The Huskies, winless in their last five, slip to 1-4-1 overall, 1-2-1 in league games.

Junior forward Matt Masucci (Winthrop, Mass.) paced the Williams offense, assisting on the first goal and scoring what proved to be the game-winning goal in the opening minute of play in the middle period.

Junior Connor Olvany (Wilmette, Ill.) gave the hosts a 1-0 advantage at 13:11 of the first period, set up by Masucci and rookie Cody Skinner (Katy, Texas).  Olvany redirected Masucci's pass by USM sophomore goalie Koray Celik (Ile-bizard, Quebec) for his third goal of the season.

Masucci scored 15 seconds into the second period when he beat Celik for his fourth goal.  Sophomore Stephen Maier (Orange, Conn.) drew the only assist.

Junior Zach Joy (Dover, N.H.) put the Huskies on the board midway through the period notching his team-leading eight goal of the season.  Junior Paul Conter (Woodbridge, Ontario) and senior Ryan Jean (Randolph, Maine) picked up the assists.

Senior Alex Smigelski (Mountain Lakes, N.J.) gave the Ephs an insurance marker at 4:23 of the third period to account for the 3-1 final.

Celik finished with 29 saves as Williams had a 32-21 edge in shots on goal.

Southern Maine journeys to Biddeford, Maine, on Tuesday (7:00 p.m.) to face ECAC Men's East newcomer, the University of New England.  Williams will host the US Under-18 team next weekend.
