BOSTON -- The University of Massachusetts Boston scored a pair of goals 54 seconds apart early in the first half en route to a 2-0 Little East Conference victory over the University of Southern Maine in a women's soccer match at the Clark Athletic Field Complex Thursday afternoon.
The win was the Beacons first ever over the Huskies after 13 defeats, and lifts their record to 3-5-0 overall and 2-0-0 in the conference. The Huskies dropped their fourth straight match to fall to 3-5-0 overall and 0-2-0 in LEC play.
Junior midfielder Erika Marsters (Mashpee, Mass.) put the host side on the board in the 13th minute when she booted home a cross from junior Kristi Morales (San Francisco, Calif.) that was misplayed by the USM defense.
Less than a minute later, freshman defender Samantha Place (Newton, N.J.) fired a high, wind-aided, 25-yard shot that eluded USM junior goalkeeper Alison Bradley (Auckland, New Zealand).
The Beacons rolled up a huge 21-2 edge in shots in the first half, and finished the match with a 30-7 advantage in shots.
Sophomore goalkeeper Ashley McRoberts (Merrimack, N.H.) posted her first shutout of the season for UMB making five saves. Bradley finished the match turning aside 16 shots.
