Southern Maine Places Sixth at Oneonta State Invitational

ONEONTA, N.Y.   – Senior Cinjin Goewey (Pittsfield, Maine/Maine Central Institute) finished second in the 141-pound bracket to lead the University of Southern Maine Huskies to a sixth place finish at the highly competitive Oneonta State Red Dragon Invitational this Saturday in Oneonta, N.Y. 

         The Huskies finished sixth out of 11 teams scoring 82.5 points.  SUNY-Cortland finished first with 133.5 points, followed by the Rochester Institute of Technology in second place with 111 points.  Johns Hopkins University placed third with 105 points. 

         One of four Southern Maine grapplers to earn at least a top-four finish, Geowey entered the invitational tournament seeded-second in the 141-pound bracket.  Geowey finished the tournament with a 3-1 record earning two pins and a decision.  Goewey started the tourney with a pair of wins by fall putting Johns Hopkins' Duncan Crystal to the mat in 4:43 and pinning Oneonta State's Pete Cardaci in 4:10.

         Freshman Zack Dipini (Franklin, N.J./Pope John XXIII) and junior Pete Gilman (Alfred, Maine/Massabesic) each earned a third place finish.  Dipini rumbled through the 133-pound bracket finishing with a 5-1 record.  Dipini earned two wins by fall and two win by major decision.  In the third place match, Dipini earned his second pin of the tournament defeating RIT's Dan Haugton in 2:24.  Gilman posted a 4-1 record at 149 pounds, winning three of his matches by fall. 

         Junior Travis Spencer (Waldo, Maine/Belfast Area) earned a fourth place finish in the heavyweight division.  Spencer finished the tournament with a 4-2 record, picking up a pair of wins by fall. 

         Southern Maine hosts its annual Ted Reese Invitational on Saturday, December 3 (10:00 a.m.) at the Costello Sports Complex in Gorham, Maine.
