Athletics Will Honor Husky Greats on Sunday, October 5 as Part of Southern Maine Homecoming Weekend

GORHAM, Maine  –  As part of a weekend long Homecoming and Family Weekend celebration the University of Southern Maine Department of Athletics will enshrine several former standout student-athletes and key athletic department figures as part of its 39th Annual Husky Hall of Fame Banquet and Induction Ceremony on Sunday, October 5 (5:00 pm) at the Italian Heritage Center in Portland, Maine presented by Gorham House of Pizza. The eight Class of 2025 inductees will bring the number of former Husky greats in the Hall to 267.
 
Gathering to celebrate the outstanding legacies, achievements and performances of past University of Southern Maine student-athletes, coaches and administrators, the 2025 Husky Hall of Fame Banquet and Induction Ceremony is one of the highlights of each academic year, and brings some of the Huskies' best and brightest back to the University of Southern Maine. This year's Husky Hall of Fame class includes standouts from cross country, baseball, field hockey, track & field, soccer, and softball.

In addition to its Hall of Fame inductees, Southern Maine Athletics will present three special awards during the ceremony: Richard A. Costello Special Achievement Award, Clifford O.T. Weden Award, and David F. Drew III Service Award. Sue White '92 is the 2025 Costello recipient, Harry "Buster" Neal will be presented with the Weiden Award, and Cindy Hazelton will be honored with the Drew Service Award. More information on these individuals will be released at a later date.
 
Established in the fall of 1985 with the initial induction ceremony taking place in 1986, the Husky Hall of Fame was created to recognize the outstanding athletic achievements of graduates of the University of Southern Maine and its predecessor institutions – Western Maine Normal School, Gorham Normal School, Gorham State Teachers College, the University of Maine Portland and the University of Maine at Portland-Gorham.  The first Hall of Fame class included seven men and two women chosen out of nearly 50 nominees.  Each of the 2025 inductees were selected on the basis of superior athletic and academic achievement, and a commitment to their communities after graduation.

Darryl Campbell Whitney, Class of 2003, Cross Country, Track & Field
A two-time Academic All-American earning the honor as a cross country and track & field athlete, Darryl Campbell Whitney was the first University of Southern Maine men's track & field athlete to qualify for and participate in the NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championship, qualifying in the 1500 meters.
 
Earning 15 All-Little East Conference citations throughout his cross country, and track & field (indoor & outdoor) competitive seasons, Whitney excelled in the 3000m, 1500m, 3000m steeplechase, and 4x800 relay.  Whitney earned Division III All-New England honors three times in his career, showing exceptional grit, talent and versatility.  Prior to the 2024-2025 Huskies' men's indoor track & field season, Whitney ranked first in the 1000m (2:29.58), 1500m (3:55.96), ninth in the mile (4:18.54), and seventh in the 5000m (15:11.75).  Prior to the 2025 outdoor season, Whitney ranked eighth all-time in the 1500m (4:03.33) and third all-time in the 3000m steeplechase (9:36.54).
 
Deedra (Beveridge) Boudreau, Class of 2005, Field Hockey, Track & Field
A standout three-sport student-athlete for the Huskies' field hockey and indoor and outdoor track & field programs, Deedra (Beveridge) Boudreau played a critical role in championships for each program. As a midfielder for the field hockey team, Boudreau finished her career as a two-time National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) National Academic Squad selection, a first team All-Little East Conference midfielder, and a 2003 NFHCA New England All-Region (second team) pick.  Finishing her career third in games played (89), Boudreau helped the Huskies to the program's first Little East Conference Championship in 2003.  She finished with 11 goals and 10 assists for 32 points in four seasons.    
 
Competing in multiple events for the Huskies' track & field programs, Boudreau earned seven All-Little East Conference citations in the 55m, 100m, 200m, 4x100 relay, 4x200 relay, and pole vault. Boudreau earned Division III All-New England status in the 4x200 relay during the indoor season, and was a member of the 4x100 relay team that earned All-ECAC Division III honors during the outdoor season.
 
An outstanding leader and student, in addition to her NFHCA Academic honors, Boudreau was a William B. Wise Scholar-Athlete, and the 2005 co-recipient of the Paula D. Hodgdon leadership award.
 
 
Peter McHugh, Class of 2011, Soccer
A three-time first team All-Little East Conference midfielder for the Huskies' soccer team, Peter McHugh played in 77 career games for Southern Maine finishing with 27 goals, including five game-winning goals, and 14 assists for 68 career points.
 
One of the best midfielders in program history, McHugh is one of just two Husky men's soccer players to be named the Little East Conference Offensive Player of the Year, earning the accolade in 2010 – his final season. Serving as team captain for the 2009 and 2010 seasons, McHugh helped the Huskies to two appearances in the Little East Conference tournament, and the 2008 LEC Regular Season Championships.
 
Earning United Soccer Coaches (formerly NSCAA) All-New England East Region second team honors, McHugh was also selected to play in the 2010 New England Intercollegiate Soccer League (NEISL) Senior All-Star game. McHugh is currently tied for seventh in career goals, tied for eighth in career assists, and tied for seventh in career points.   
 
Mary Caron, Class of 2016, 2018, Softball
Earning third team Academic All-America honors in 2017, Mary Caron was a standout shortstop for the Huskies' softball team from 2015-2017. Finishing in the top of several career statistics in just three seasons with Southern Maine, Caron hit .356 for her career, collecting 133 hits (25 doubles, seven triples, and five home runs) in 374 at-bats while driving in 61 runs. 
 
A standout defensively, Caron earned first team All-Little East Conference honors for the Huskies in 2017 after hitting .349 with 21 RBI. With an accomplished three-season career, Caron finished fifth in assists (246), 10th in slugging percentage (.500), tied for 16th in total bases (187), 21st in RBI (61), tied for 19th in doubles (25), and tied for 28th in batting average. Her 133 career hits are in the top 20 in program history. 
 
An outstanding student and leader, Caron earned All-Academic Team honors from the Little East Conference, was a William B. Wise Scholar-Athlete, and was the 2017 Little East Conference Woman of the Year.  One of the student-speakers at the 2017 Senior Honors Night Banquet, Caron was the co-recipient of the Paula D. Hodgdon Award.

 
Hannah Damron, Class of 2017, Cross Country, Track & Field
Competing in three seasons for the Huskies as a member of the cross country, indoor and outdoor track & field teams, Hannah Damron's list of accolades is lengthy and accomplished. A two-time NCAA Championship qualifier in indoor (800m & heptathlon), the Little East Conference Outdoor Track Rookie of the Year, and an All-Region runner in cross country, Damron earned 23 All-Little East Conference citations, winning individual event Little East titles eight times.
 
Earning a spot in the NCAA Championship (indoor) in the 800m, Damron still holds the program record in the event (2:13.39), and is in the top eight in three other events (600m, 1000m, and mile). A talented multi-event athlete, Damron earned her second trip to the National Championship during the outdoor track & field season, competing in the heptathlon – an event in which she earned USTFCCCA All-Region, NEICAAA All-New England and NCAA Division III All-Region honors. 
 
Logan Carman, Class of 2017, Baseball
A four-year pitcher for the Huskies' baseball team (2011-2014), Logan Carman earned ABCA/Rawlings Division III All-American first team honors in 2013 after setting the Southern Maine single-season record for wins (12).  Posting a remarkable 12-1 record as a junior, Carman held a 2.00 earned run average in 94.1 innings pitched while keeping his opponents to an anemic .208 batting average. 
 
Carman finished his career with 23 wins (ranked tied for 5th all-time), and earned numerous accolades.  In addition to his first team All-America honors, Carman was a D3baseball.com All-American (second team), New England Intercollegiate Baseball Association (NEIBA) All-New England first team, ECAC Division III New England All-Star (first team), D3baseball.com All-New England (first team) selection and All-Little East (first team) selection.  During the 2013 season, Carman was named the Little East Conference Pitcher of the Year, D3baseball.com New England Region Pitcher of the Year, and ECAC Division III New England Pitcher of the Year.
 
Helping Southern Maine to back-to-back LEC Championships in 2012 and 2013, Carman and the Huskies made three appearances in the NCAA Division III National Championship and back-to-back World Series appearances in 2013 and 2014 with the Huskies finishing as the National Runner Up in 2013.  Carman was named to the 2013 NCAA New England Regional Tournament All-Tourney Team, and was named to 2014 Most Outstanding Player at the NCAA Regional Tournament.
 
 
Jamie Ruginski, Class of 2025, Track & Field
The most decorated student-athlete in the history of the Huskies' men's track & field programs (indoor and outdoor), Jamie Ruginski finished his remarkable career as a four-time NCAA Division III National Champion, and a eight-time NCAA Division III All-American. 
 
Winning countless individual titles and accolades, Ruginski earned All-America honors in the long jump and triple jump during the 2014, and 2015 Indoor Track & Field National Championships, and the 2014 and 2015 Outdoor Track & Field Championships.  Claiming his first national championship in the indoor triple jump in 2014, Ruginski repeated the feat during the 2014 outdoor championship, and 2015 indoor championship.  During the 2015 outdoor national championship, Ruginski claimed the title of National Champion for the fourth time – this time in the Long Jump.
 
Over the course of his career, Ruginski was named the Little East Conference Field Athlete of the Year three times, and was twice named the USTFCCCA Men's Division III Field Athlete of the Year.  Capping off his outstanding career at the 2025 outdoor national championship with another title and pair of All-American honors, Ruginski was named the USTFCCCA Men's Outstanding Field Performer of the Year at the Division III Championship.

Edward Flaherty, Retired Baseball, Women's Soccer Coach
After a 39-year career serving University of Southern Maine student-athletes, legendary Husky baseball coach Ed Flaherty retired in the spring of 2024 with a laundry list of accolades, historic wins, and lives touched.  Joining the Huskies' coaching staff in 1986, Flaherty led both the Southern Maine women's soccer and baseball programs in the early part of his career. Fully admitting he was excited to learn that soccer played 11 a side, Flaherty helped guide the Huskies' women's program through its first seven seasons. During that same time, Flaherty was building a powerhouse of NCAA Division III baseball, winning the University's and program's first NCAA National Championship in 1991 and its second in 1997. Flaherty's teams made eight trips to the College World Series and won eight regional championships. Over his 39 seasons, the Huskies competed in 26 NCAA tournaments. Flaherty retired with a remarkable career record of 1,133-531-4.
 
Named the Little East Conference Coach of the Year 11 times, American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA) Regional Coach of the Year 10 times, the D3Baseball.Com Region Coach of the Year twice, and the ABCA National Coach of the Year twice, Flaherty coached more than 40 ABCA All-Americans in his career, and two of his former players were named the ABCA/Rawlings National Player of the Year: shortstop Sam Dexter (2015) and outfielder Tucker White (2013).  With his induction into the Husky Hall of Fame, Flaherty is now enshrined in six Hall of Fame bodies: ABCA Hall of Fame (2005), University of Maine Sports Hall of Fame (1992), State of Maine Baseball Hall of Fame (1993), Little East Conference Hall of Fame (2013), the Maine Sports Hall of Fame (2014), and the New England Intercollegiate Baseball Association Hall of Fame (2018).
