Ryan Dyer Elevated to Assistant Cross Country and Track & Field Coach

GORHAM, Maine – Ryan Dyer has been permanently named a full-time assistant coach for the University of Southern Maine cross country and track & field program after serving in an interim capacity since September. A former USM track & field student-athlete, Dyer ran for the Huskies from 2006-2011.

"I'm extremely grateful to head coach Rob Whitten and the entire athletic staff for giving me the opportunity to be a part of this program. This past year has been amazing being able to coach at this level and I'm excited to be able to continue working with a great group of student athletes." said Dyer.

Dyer joined the USM staff in September after a successful career in the high school ranks at nearby Bonny Eagle High School. He earned Southwestern Maine Activities Association (SMAA) Coach of the Year three times while at Bonny Eagles and coached a total of 28 individual state champions in cross country, indoor track and field and outdoor track and field. Dyer was also honored in 2023 as the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) High School Girls Cross Country Coach of the Year for the state of Maine.

"We (the team and I) are really excited to have Ryan remain in the permanent role as the assistant track coach going forward. He stepped into the interim role on fairly short notice, with a pretty steep learning curve to get to know a large group of athletes he would be working with. Coming off team championships in 2024 and a very veteran group returning the expectations for this year were pretty high and if anything, we've only exceeded those expectations with team championships, All-American's and school records. I'm excited we'll have the whole off season to better prepare for the upcoming season, but first we still have some work to do with our outdoor championships coming up!" said head coach Rob Whitten.

Dyer, who spent a season as a volunteer assistant coach with the men's cross country team in 2011 following the end of his collegiate career, completed his bachelor's degree in business management this past fall.
