2025 Wise Scholar Athlete Story Header

General Christina Cracolici, Director of Athletic Communications

University of Southern Maine Athletics to Honor 260 William B. Wise Scholar Athletes on Sunday

GORHAM, Maine    –   Two hundred sixty University of Southern Maine student-athletes will be recognized for their outstanding athletic and academic achievements during the William B. Wise Scholar-Athlete Awards Ceremony and Banquet on Sunday, February 23, 2024 (5:00 pm). Huskies' Athletics will host its 36th annual William B. Wise awards reception at the Italian Heritage Center in Portland, Maine.

As customary, the William B. Wise Scholar-Athlete ceremony will feature student-athlete speakers and award recipients. Addressing their peers, family and University staff and faculty at the event will be senior Amelie St-Amant of the women's ice hockey team, and junior Kyle Douin (Augusta, Maine/Cony) of the baseball team. Interim Director of Athletics Mike Keller, Associate Athletic Director Kim Turner, and University of Southern Maine President Jacqueline Edmondson will make remarks to the outstanding group of student-athletes, and their family and friends gathering for the occasion.

The 2024 Little East Conference Player of the Year, Douin was named a College Sports Communicators Academic All-American last spring for his remarkable athletic and academic achievements.  A Mechanical Engineering major, Douin is a two-time William B. Wise honoree, and has a growing least of athletic accolades to his resume. In addition to LEC Player of the Year honors, Douin was named to New England Intercollegiate Baseball Association (NEIBA), D3baseball.com and American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA) All-Region first teams as a sophomore.

A four-year member of the Huskies' women's ice hockey team, St-Amant keeps a busy schedule as a student-athlete, and University of Southern Maine Student Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) officer while pursuing a double-major in Exercise Science and Health Sciences with minors in psychology, and the honors program.  A three-time Wise recipient, St-Amant has led the women's ice hockey program in blocked shots over her last three seasons, and recently skated in her 100th career game. A defenseman, St-Amant has a career-best seven assists this season which is good for second on the team, and she currently has 58 blocked shots.

Created during the 1987-1988 academic year, the William B. Wise Scholar-Athlete Award is named in honor of William B. Wise, a retired USM administrator and friend of athletics. A graduate of the University of Maine, Wise began his career at  the University of Southern Maine in 1966 as assistant dean of academic affairs, and director of the evening college.  In the ensuing years, he served the University tirelessly in a variety of roles, including acting dean of the College of Education, assistant to the vice president for academic affairs, executive assistant to the president, and executive assistant to the vice president for student affairs. During the 2023 University of Southern Maine Homecoming and Family Weekend, the Athletic Department's Learning Center was renamed in Wise's honor to recognize his invaluable contributions to the success and academic achievement of Husky student-athletes. Wise, his family, and many former student-athletes, coaches and colleagues were on hand to congratulate Wise on his lasting impact during the ceremony.

During the 2023-2024 academic year, 260 Huskies met or exceeded the criteria to receive Wise Scholar-Athlete recognition, and the Huskies' Athletic Department's nearly 450 student-athletes, representing 45 distinct academic majors, combined for a grade point average of 3.21.  To earn William B. Wise Scholar-Athlete accolades, a Southern Maine student-athlete must have a minimum of a 3.00 cumulative grade point average for the fall and spring semesters, be a full-time student both semesters, and be a member of varsity team for a full season. Each of the Huskies' 22 intercollegiate programs sponsored during last academic year has representation among the 260 student-athletes to be honored.

"To succeed as a student-athlete at the Division III level requires an uncommon level of discipline, drive, and often times personal sacrifice. The dedication and the determination of our student-athletes to achieve at the highest levels in their academic and athletic pursuits means that as a group each of the 260 student-athletes honored have balanced their responsibilities and commitment to their academics, athletics, part-time jobs, internships, practicums, family and friends," said Interim Director of Athletics Mike Keller. "Each year Husky student-athletes raise the bar, and I could not be more proud of their continued success, hard work and perseverance in all areas of their lives. It is a tremendous statistic to be able to say that more than 50 percent of University of Southern Maine student-athletes have put in the work to earn a 3.0 or higher-grade point average."

Ten University of Southern Maine Huskies will earn the William B. Wise Scholar-Athlete honor for a rare fifth time, including two-time Paula D. Hodgdon Leadership Award winner Rona Scott formerly of the Huskies' softball team, and ABCA All-American Cam Seymour former of the Huskies' baseball team.  Scott and Seymour graduated from the University last spring with degrees in Elementary Education and Sport Management respectively.

An outstanding 26 student-athletes will win their fourth Wise award.  Among the four-time winners are three-time New England Hockey Conference Goaltender of the Year Haley McKim – the program's most recent AHCA All-American, Catriona Gould (Freeport, Maine) the all-time leader in goals, assists and points for the three-time defending Little East Conference champion women's soccer team, and two-time NCAA Division III National Champion in the pole vault Ben Drummey (Biddeford, Maine) of the men's indoor and outdoor track and field teams.

The Husky student-athletes who have earned the academic honor for the fourth time represent a broad range of academic pursuits (17 in total), including Health Sciences, Nursing, Biology, Mechanical Engineering, History, Physics, Social and Behavioral Science, Sport Management, Criminology, Psychology, Linguistics, Exercise Science, Teacher Leadership, Business, Marketing, Business Analytics and Finance. Gould, a four-time All-Little East Conference forward, and three-time United Soccer Coaches' All-Region selection earned her undergraduate degree in Biology and is currently a graduate student in the Occupational Therapy program.  Drummey, a five-time NCAA All-American and two-time Academic All-American, is completing his degree in Nursing, while McKim, the women's ice hockey team's all-time leader in shutouts, wins, and career saves is finishing her degree in Health Science.

In addition to guest speakers, dinner and individual student-athletes award recognition, two teams will receive the Remo Riciputi Award. The Remo Riciputi, given annually to the team sport, and the individual team sport with the highest collective grade-point average, will be announced as part of the awards banquet.  Last year's winners were the Huskies' field hockey and men's cross country teams.
