Southern Maine Men’s Golf Looks to Repeat as Little East Conference Champions

GORHAM, Maine – The 2024 Little East Conference men's golf champion University of Southern Maine Huskies will be looking to defend their conference title on Thursday and Friday at the 2025 Little East Conference Championship at Redding Country Club in in Redding, Conn. Redding Country Club is a par-71, 6,355-yard course. The event is being hosted by Western Connecticut State University.

The Huskies set a conference-championship record in the first round of last season's event with a two-under 282 from an all-freshman lineup. Jaden Poirier (White River Junction, Vt./Hartford) also made conference history as he recorded the lowest score in Little East Conference Championship history with a 64 (-7). The Huskies then shot a 315 (+31) on day two and held off a charge by Eastern Connecticut State University to secure the first LEC title in program history and a trip to the NCAA Championships.

This year's championship lineup features three returners from last season's team in Poirier, sophomore Alex Fournier (Augusta, Maine/Cony) and sophomore Alex Grant (St. Albans, Maine/Nokomis Regional). Poirier was last season's runner-up and a First Team All-LEC performer. Fournier also earned all-conference honors by placing ninth to earn a spot on the second team. Both players have earned medalist honors at least one event this season.

Grant tied for 14th at last season's event and has been on a tear this season with three medalist honors and three LEC Player of the Week citations to his name and will certainly be in contention for an all-conference spot.

Rounding out the lineup for the Huskies will be junior Finn Sharpe (Durham, Maine/Freeport) and freshman Keenan Buteau (Scarborough, Maine). Buteau is a two-time LEC Rookie of the Week and has been playing very well in his first season with the Huskies. Sharpe has been a consistent performer with five top 10 finishes this season.

As returning champions, the Huskies will be grouped with the other top three teams from last year, Eastern Connecticut State and Western Connecticut State, for the first round. Their tee times began at 9:50 am.
