GORHAM, Maine – Gearing up to being the second half of its season, the University of Southern Maine Huskies' wrestling team is now ranked 10
th in the most recent (January 7) National Wrestling Coaches' Association (NWCA) Top 25 Tournament Coaches' Poll. Huskies' wrestling has been in the top 25 of several coaching polls this season, including polls from Open Mat Wrestling. The Huskies have moved from 14
th to 10
th in the NWCA Poll.
Husky standouts and All-Americans senior
Colby Frost (Steep Falls, Maine/Bonny Eagle) and junior
Jake Craig (Norridewock, Maine/Skowhegan) also remain among the nation's best in their respective weight classes. Craig remains steadily listed as ranked no. 2 in the nation at 133 lbs, while Frost has jumped up a few spots to earn a no. 2 ranking at 149 lbs.
Twice named the NEWA Wrestler of the Week, Frost has dominated his competition so far this season and is 16-0. A 2024 NCAA Division III All-American, Frost has shown good form in the early part of the season as 14 of his 16 wins have been for extra points, including seven wins by fall, and four wins by technical fall. Closing in on 100 wins in his career Frost has a career record of 98-12. Ranked first in the region in his division, Frost is a Health Sciences major, and a College Sports Communicator Academic All-District, and NWCA Scholar All-American recipient.
A two-time NCAA National Qualifier and a 2023 NCAA Division III All-American, Craig is currently holding a record of 8-2. Bumping up a weight class to 133 lbs for his junior season after competing as a freshman and sophomore at 125 lbs, Craig has key wins over nationally-ranked opponents No. 3 Peyton Ellis of Johnson and Wales, and No. 14 Andrew Marchese of Castleton. Owning five extra-point wins, including three wins by technical fall, Craig's two losses this season are against No. 1 nationally-ranked wrestlers Chase Randall (Coast Guard, 133 lbs) and Joziah Fry (Johnson & Wales, 125 lbs). Currently 63-14 in his career, Craig is a Cyber Security major. He is a NWCA Scholar All-American and a College Sports Communicator Academic All-District selection. He is ranked second in the region.
Joining Craig and Frost in the regional ranks for Southern Maine are senior
Anthony Mears (Lawrence, Mass./Central Catholic) and sophomore
Kyle Moore (Kennebunk, Maine/Division Avenue (NY)). Mears is currently ranked eighth in the region at 197 lbs. Moore is 13-4 in a strong start to his sophomore campaign, and is currently ranked fifth in the region by the NWCA. Moore went 4-0 at the Ted Reese Invitational to claim the podium spot in his most recent competition.
Returning to action this weekend, Southern Maine competes in the Manganaro Duals hosted by Ursinus College in Pennsylvania. The Huskies will face off against Roger Williams, American International College, Shippensburg and Oneonta in dual meet action on Saturday, January 11 beginning at 10 am.
