Huskies Place Ninth at New England Wrestling Association Duals

Frost Goes 4-0; Moves to 26-0 on the Season

PROVIDENCE, Rhode Island   –  Senior Colby Frost (Steep Falls, Maine/Bonny Eagle) posted a 4-0 record as the University of Southern Maine Huskies finished tenth at the 2025 New England Wrestling Association (NEWA) Duals hosted by Johnson & Wales University. Frost, ranked No. 2/3, at 149 lbs, is now 26-0 on the season.

Southern Maine dropped its opener 36-9 against Wesleyan (Conn.) and then won two straight defeating New England College 37-15 and Trinity (Conn.) 27-16, before narrowly falling to Rhode Island College 22-20.  Southern Maine entered the tournament seeded 11th and took on sixth-seed Wesleyan to open, before defeating 14th-seed New England College, 10th seed Trinity and 12th seed Rhode Island College.

On the Mat:
  • Against Wesleyan, Frost and junior Jake Craig (Norridgewock, Maine/Skowhegan) accounted for all nine of the Huskies' points.  Ranked second by NEWA at 133 lbs, Craig defeated Wesleyan's Max Martinez with a 5:33 win by fall. Martinez entered the day ranked seventh.  At 149 lbs, Frost is ranked first in the region by NEWA.  He earned a narrow 8-7 win by decision against Ike Guttentag – the seventh ranked wrestler in the region.
  • The Huskies won seven of 10 bouts against New England College including the last six consecutively to overcome a 15-3 deficit.  NEC claimed victories at 125, 141 and 149 to lead 15-3 with Craig earning the Huskies' first three points with a 6-5 win over fifth-ranked Caden Frost. Wrestling at 157, Frost continued his winning ways with a 10-1 major decision win over Zach Soda.  Wins by fall from sophomore Derek Cote (Lebanon, Maine/Noble) at 165 pounds and sophomore Michael Sanchez (Nesconset, NY/Smithtown East)  at 184 pounds highlighted the final five bouts.  Cote pinned NEC's Dominic Demaio in 1:28, while Sanchez made quick work of Josh Bean in 58 seconds.
  • Falling behind Trinity 8-0 after losses at 125 and 133 lbs, sophomore Kyle Moore (Kennebunk, Maine/Division Avenue (NY)) got the Huskies on the board with a 4-2 win over Daniel Echeverria at 141 lbs.  Frost then earned a 6:17 win by fall over Trinity's Chris Perry to put the Huskies in front temporarily 9-8.  After the 157 bout, Trinity regained the lead 13-9, before back-to-back wins from Cote and senior Tyler Haynes (Metuchen, NJ) at 165 and 174 points put the Huskies in front 15-13.  Cote had a 5-3 win over John Lagana, while Haynes battled to a 7-5 win by decision over Tucker Vician.  Trinity again took the lead with a win by decision at 184 pounds before senior Anthony Mears (Lawrence, Mass./Central Catholic) and freshman Jon Lettre (Augusta, Maine/Cony) sealed the win with back-to-back wins by fall at 197 and 285 lbs. Mears pinned Booker Lester in 1:39, while Lettre pinned Emre Sensoy in 3:00 for the 27-16 final.
