Craig & Frost Shine in Dual Meets at JWU


PROVIDENCE, RI   –  Senior Colby Frost (Steep Falls, Maine/Bonny Eagle) and junior Jake Craig (Norridgewock, Maine/Skowhegan) each went 2-0 to highlight a pair of dual meets hosted by Johnson and Wales University  this weekend (Results were reported final on Monday).  Southern Maine fell to No. 5 Johnson & Wales University 32-12, and No. 22 Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) 27-14.
 
Craig was outstanding in his two bouts at 133 lbs. Ranked 12th by OpenMat wrestling in his weight class, Craig squared off against the number four ranked wrestler in the nation JWU's Peyton Ellis and scrapped his way to a 7-4 win.
 
On the Mat:
  • Ranked fifth by Open Mat Wrestling at 149 lbs, Frost remained undefeated on the season with a pair of wins to improve to 8-0. Frost defeated his JWU opponent by technical fall 20-3, and then overpowered RIT's Jared Lee 24-9 for another technical fall.
  • Craig did not relent after his big win over JWU's Ellis, and earned another hard-won win over RIT's Gabe Scalise 4-3. 
  • Sophomore Michael Sanchez (Nesconset, NY/Smithtown East) had a 15-7 major decision win over JWU's Ky'ell Roper. Sanchez entered the match ranked eighth in NEWA at 184 pounds, while Roper was ranked fifth.
  • Senior Anthony Mears (Lawrence, Mass./Central Catholic) picked up a 4-3 decision against RIT's Nicholas Smith.
 
 
Up Next:
Southern Maine competes at the Doug Parker Invitational on Saturday, November 23 hosted by Springfield College.  The Huskies are back home on Saturday, December 7 (10:00 am) hosting their annual Ted Reese Invitational.
