Southern Maine Upsets No. 14 Endicott 3-2 in Overtime

BEVERLY, Mass. – Fifth year senior Nick Nault (Goffstown, N.H.) scored the game-winning goal 38 seconds in overtime to give the University of Southern Maine Huskies a 3-2 upset win over the No. 14 Endicott College Gulls on Friday night at Raymond J. Bourque Arena. After falling behind 2-1 late in the third period freshman Gavin Simopoulos (Cape Elizabeth, Maine) delivered a clutch goal to tie the game with less than three minutes left and force overtime. Despite being overshot 48-18, senior goalie Mason Palmer (Cumming, Ga./Georgia Connections Academy) kept the Huskies in the game with a 46-save effort.

How It Happened:
  • Endicott went on the power play eight second into the contest, but the Huskies answered with a shorthanded goal by senior Mathieu Sabourin (Alexandria, Ontario) after classmate Zach Desmarais (St. Cyrille, Quebec) chased down a loose puck to create an odd man rush and found his teammate crashing the net.
  • The Gulls answered with a shorthanded goal of their own 37 seconds into the second period when John Goldowski scored following a rebound in front of the net. Palmer then went on to stop the next 17 shots that he faced in the period to keep the score tied at 1-1.
  • Dominic Garozzo put Endicott ahead 2-1 13:51 into the third period by scoring following the rebound of a shot by Michael Casey. Simopoulos' first collegiate goal evened the score with less than 2:54 left on the clock and the Huskies held on to force overtime. Sophomores Marcus Torgner (Mjolby, Sweden) and Owen Drummey (Falmouth, Maine) were credited with the assists. The assist is the first point of Drummey's career.
  • Nault blasted a one-timer past the right side of Wilson in overtime to give the Huskies the win after a pass from sophomore Matt Sullivan (Hingham, Mass./New Hampton School). Junior Kadin Ilott (Kenora, Ontario) also had an assist on the game-winner.
Inside The Stats:
  • Endicott led 48-18 in shots on goal and 39-30 in faceoff wins.
  • The Huskies played strong defense in front of Palmer with 15 blocked shots. Junior Cole Brennan (Sussex, N.J./ Pomfret School) and sophomore Ethan MacDuff (Lloydminster, Alberta) each blocked three shots.
  • The Huskies have now upset four ranked teams under second year head coach Matt Pinchevsky.
  • Nault's goal is the second of his career and his first game-winner.
