PORTLAND, Maine – Senior captain
Zach Ellsworth (Saranac Lake, NY/Northwood School) of the University of Southern golf team placed seventh at the 2023 Little East Conference (LEC) Men's Golf Championship to earn Second Team All-LEC honors. Southern Maine moved up a spot in the team standings to finish fourth in the six-team field with a team score of 643 (+83) at the event at Riverside Golf Course.
Eastern Connecticut State University (590, +30) retained the top place of the leaderboard to win their third consecutive LEC title. The Warriors shot 287 (+7) on the day to add to their 303 (+23) from round one. Keene State College (619, +59) placed second followed by Vermont State University Castleton (633, +73) in third. The Huskies finish in fourth just two strokes ahead of Rhode Island College (645, +85). Western Connecticut State University placed sixth with a team score of 655 (+95). ECSU's Ashton Lewis was the individual conference champion thanks to a five-under par performance in the second round to finish one-over par (141) for the tournament.
Ellsworth shaved nine strokes off his first-round score and tied for the second-best round of the second day of competition. Ellsworth birdied the eighth hole for the second day in a row on his way to a two-over par round (72). In 2021 Ellsworth tied for fifth at the LEC Championship and also earned All-LEC status.
Sophomore
Sam Farr (Gorham, Maine) shot an 80 (+10) in the second round and was two-over par through the first nine holes thanks to a birdie on the seventh hole. Farr placed 15th overall (161, +10) and tied for 21st last year at the conference championship. Senior
Jett Healy (Stratham, N.H./Exeter) and junior
Colin DeWitt (Newington, Conn.) each matched their score from the first round. Healy tied for 18th with a 164 (+24) and DeWitt placed 56th with a score of 176 (+36). Freshman
Jackson Horne (Woodsville, N.H.) was a stroke behind his first-round score at 83 (+13) and finished 21st overall (165, +25).
The Huskies will wrap up the season at the New England Intercollegiate Golf Association (NEIGA) Championships at The Captains Golf Course in Brewster, Mass. next weekend.
