Sam Farr (Gorham, Maine) and senior captain
Zach Ellsworth (Saranac Lake, NY/Northwood School) each shot 11-over par (81) to lead the University of Southern Maine Huskies in the first round 2023 Little East Conference (LEC) Men's Golf Championship at Riverside Golf Course in Portland. Farr and Ellsworth are tied for 16th after the first 18 holes. As a team, the Huskies shot 326 (+46) to finish a stroke ahead of Western Connecticut State University on the team leaderboard in fifth place.
Two-time defending champion Eastern Connecticut State University finished the day +23 (303) for the team lead. Keene State College finished five strokes behind the Warriors (308, +28). Rhode Island College and Vermont State University Castleton ended the first round tied for third at +41 (321). RIC will tee off the second for round two due to having a better fifth-man score. RIC's Jasper Bruins Slot shot an even-par 70 for the lowest round of the day.
Ellsworth was three-over on the front-nine with a birdie on the eighth hole and four pars. Farr had eight pars on the day and a birdie on hole 17. Senior
Jett Healy (Stratham, N.H./Exeter) and freshman
Jackson Horne (Woodsville, N.H.) each carded an 82 (+12) to tie for 19th. Healy had eight pars and a 40-42 split for his second-best round of the season. Horne birdied the 16th hole and recorded six pars. He had the best back-nine score for the Huskies with a 40 (+4).
Junior
Colin DeWitt (Newington, Conn.) fired an 88 (+18) to tie for 26th.
The Huskies will play in the first wave of the second round tomorrow with the first group teeing off at 10:00 am.
