SPRINGFIELD, Mass.  –  Senior captain Jake Peavey (South China, Maine/Erskine Academy) went 3-0 on the day with two wins by fall to highlight the University of Southern Maine Huskies competition at the 2023 New England Wrestling Association (NEWA) Duals hosted by Springfield College.  Peavey's three wins keeps the Huskies' 285-pound grappler undefeated this season at 14-0. 
 
Seeded sixth to start the tourney, Southern Maine opened with a 33-13 win over Rhode Island College winning seven of 10 bouts. The Huskies dropped its next three duals. The Huskies dropped their second match 46-0 to United States Coast Guard Academy before losing a close match 24-21 versus Williams. Facing off against Roger Williams for seventh place, Southern Maine fell 28-17. The Huskies are 7-5 in dual meets this season.
 
On the Mat:

• Freshman Caden Frost (Steep Falls, Maine/Bonny Eagle) went 3-0 on the day defeating Rhode Island College's Michael Pestana 6-3, Williams' Donnie Morton 7-3 at 141, and Roger Williams' Peter trinali 8-6 at 149. Frost has won his last six bouts consecutively and is now 12-5 as a rookie.
• Sophomore Colby Frost (Steep Falls, Maine/Bonny Eagle) improved to 19-4 with three wins in three matches.  Frost defeated RIC's Jensen Offerman with a pin at 6:25, and Williams' Caleb Seyfriend by way of pin in 1:09.  In his final match of the day, Frost earned a 19-4 win by technical fall over Roger Williams' Matt Lucas at 157 pounds.  Ranked second in NEWA at 149 pounds, Frost's win versus Seyfried was a no. 2 vs. No. 8 match-up.
• Peavey remains undefeated with three wins in as many matches, including two wins by fall. Peavey downed RIC's Michael Alfonso in 1:42, and Williams' Tim Rown in 1:13 before earning a 6-0 decision against Roger Williams' William Ogbebor. Peavey is now 14-0.
