Southern Maine Sweeps WestConn: Merrill Earns Both Wins

DANBURY, Conn.   –  Sophomore Lauren Merrill (Bethel, Maine/Oxford Hills) pitched a five-inning no-hitter in game one, and then threw four innings of scoreless relief to earn the win in game two as the University of Southern Maine Huskies swept the WestConn Wolves 9-0 (5 inn) and 6-4 (10 inn) in a Little East Conference softball doubleheader Sunday afternoon at Westside Field.

After earning an eight-run rule shortened 9-0 win in game one, Southern Maine rallied from a 4-1 deficit with three runs in the top of the seventh, and then scored twice in the 10th to earn the sweep.  Sophomore Dory Kulis (Georgetown, Maine/Morse) had a two-out, two-run, pinch-hit single in the seventh to force extras for the Huskies.

HOW IT HAPPENED GAME ONE: USM 9 WestConn 0 (5 inn)
  • Merrill fired a five-inning no-hitter, striking out six, and yielding a walk and the Huskies scored four two-out runs in the top of the first to take a 9-0 win in game one.
  • With the first two batters out, Husky sophomore Madison Day (Otisfield, Maine/Oxford Hills) connected on a triple and then scored on an error to make it 1-0.  A walk to junior Lauren Leidemann-Smith (South Berwick, Maine/Marshwood), a single through the left side from Merrill and a walk to junior Hannah Shields (Buckfield, Maine) loaded the bases for the Huskies, and junior Rona Scott (Beverly, Mass.) took advantage hitting a double down the right field line for three RBI and a 4-0 USM lead.
  • Merrill worked her way around an infield error in the bottom of the first, and USM scored three more runs in the top of the second to quickly make it a 7-0 lead.  Leidemann-Smith had a two-run single, while Merrill helped her own cause with an RBI double to the gap in right.  In the bottom of the second, Merrill picked up a strikeout and two ground outs to work around a walk.
  • In the third, Scott continued her strong hitting, leading off the inning with a solo home run to gap in right, and Day added a sacrifice fly RBI to left pushing the score to 9-0 Huskies.
  • Merrill retired the Wolves in order in the third and fourth to keep the Huskies up, and in the fifth, Merill retired her seventh and eighth straight hitters before an infield error put a WestConn runner on first. Merrill bounced back getting a pop up to end the game.

HOW IT HAPPENED GAME TWO: USM 6  WestConn 4 (10 inn).
  • Down 4-1 in their final at-bat, the Huskies rallied with three runs in the top of the seventh.  Scott started the rally with a one-out single to left, before Shields put runners on third and second with a double to the gap in right. USM made its deficit 4-2 when pinch-runner Brook Kulis (Georgetown, Maine/Morse) scored on a fielder's choice off of the bat of freshman Meghan Dufresne (Mattapoisett, Mass./Old Rochester Regional).  With runners on first and third, the Wolves got their second out of the inning, before Kulis knocked in the game-tying runs with her single to left.
  • Merrill came on to start the seventh in relief of starter sophomore Belle Snyder (Epping, N.H.), and retired the Wolves in order to send the game to extra innings.  Both teams collected a walk in the eighth and the game headed to the ninth tied up at 4-4.
  • In the top of the ninth, WestConn's Hailey Golembiewski struck out the side, and Merrill matched her effort in the home half of the ninth to keep the game 4-4 into the 10th.
  • With the international tie-breaker in effect, Husky runner Lauren Miller (St. George, Maine/Camden Regional) moved up to third on a fielder's choice from junior Brynn Hink (Porter, Maine/Sacopee Valley). Miller scored to go-ahead run beating the play at home on a fielder's choice from Day in the next at bat, and Merrill made it 6-4 with an RBI single before WestConn recorded the final two outs of the inning.
  • In the bottom of the 10th, Merrill overcame a passed ball and an error with three consecutive outs to earn the win.
  • In addition to Kulis' two RBI, Day and Merrill each had an RBI for the Huskies.  Merrill who started game two as the Huskies' designated player was 2-for-4 at the plate.
  • WestConn's Golembiewski had 15 strikeouts in the loss.  Snyder and Merrill combined for 12 strikeouts over 10 innings.
