PROVIDENCE, Rhode Island. – Freshman
Tyler Haynes (Metuchen, N.J./Metuchen) advanced to the consolation semifinals of the 2020 New England Wrestling Association (NEWA) Futures tournament to highlight the University of Southern Maine Huskies' wrestling competition Sunday afternoon at the Wildcat Center at Johnson & Wales University.
Haynes scored 10 of the Huskies 20.5 points as USM finished 11
th out of 14 teams in the tourney. Castleton University finished first scoring 210 points, followed by host Johnson & Wales with 186.5. Springfield College placed third with 87.
Haynes won four straight after suffering a 4-0 decision loss in his opening match of the day to Springfield's Noah Beal Henderson. Haynes bounced back with a 2:29 win by fall over Norwich's Mike Milanoski before taking an 8-1 decision over Norwich's Joshua Ducharme. Haynes then won back-to-back matches by fall pinning Wesleyan's Ciaran Edwards in 4:39 and Rhode Island College's Michael Burns in 6:50. Haynes bowed out in the consolation semifinals to Springfield's Jeremy Scutellaro in a narrow 10-8 decision. Scutellaro went on to finish fourth.
Sophomores
Henri Kuntz (Gorham, Maine),
Justin Beiler (Enfield, Conn.) and
Colton DeLeo (Monroe, Conn./Mask) each scored for the Huskies. Beiler earned a win by technical fall over Springfield's Connor McCarthy (16-1), while Kuntz had a win by fall over Western New England's Colsten Volpe in 6:51. DeLeo also had a win by fall, pinning Dylan Sofield of Trinity in 1:57.
Southern Maine returns to action on Saturday and Sunday, February 26-27 at the NCAA Division III Northeast Regional Championship hosted by Springfield College.
