Jake Craig each earned wins by fall as the University of Southern Maine Huskies opened their 2022-23 season with a 28-16 win over the Bridgewater State University Bears in a Saturday afternoon wrestling dual meet at Hill Gymnasium.
How It Happened:
- Wrestling at 125, Craig opened the match picking up his first intercollegiate win and first win by fall pinning Bridgewater State's Sei Dolomengi in 1:20. Craig's pin gave USM a 6-0 lead.
- Pool's pin at 157 over BSU's Willam Conniff in 1:57 gave the Huskies a 16-7 advantage before the Bears won back-to-back matches at 165 and 174 to tie the match up at 16.
- Southern Maine bounced back, however, winning the next three weight classes to secure the win. Timothy Smale earned a 3-0 decision at 184, and then Beebe pinned Bears' Amauris Gomez in 3:39 to give the Huskies a 25-16.
- Huskies' captain, and nationally-ranked (9th) 285 grappler Jake Peavey closed out the match with a 6-1 decision against the Bears' Brandon Lavasta.
