Southern Maine Honors 224 William B. Wise Scholar Athletes

Huskies’ Athletics Boasts Collective 3.21 GPA Among 450 Student-Athletes

GORHAM, Maine – Two hundred twenty-four University of Southern Maine student-athletes will be recognized for their outstanding athletic and academic achievements during the annual William B. Wise Scholar-Athlete Awards Ceremony and Banquet presented by United States Army ROTC on Sunday, December 4, 2022.  Huskies' Athletics will host its 34th annual William B. Wise awards dinner at the Italian Heritage Center in Portland, Maine beginning at 5:00 pm.

As customary, the William B. Wise Scholar Athlete ceremony will feature student-athlete speakers and award recipients. Addressing their peers, family and University staff and faculty at the event will be senior Tanner McClure (Biddeford, Maine) of the men's ice hockey team and graduate student Ciera Berthiaume (Windham, Maine) of the women's soccer program.  Veteran Southern Maine Director of Athletics Al Bean, Associate Athletic Director Kim Turner, University president Dr. Jaqueline Edmondson and Interim Provost Adam Tuchinsky will also make remarks.

McClure, a member of the men's ice hockey team's leadership group, is also an active member of the Huskies' Student Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) and co-founder USM's first Best Buddies chapter. A Sports Management major, McClure completed an internship with the Portland Sea Dogs over the summer, and is a two-time New England Hockey Conference All-Academic team member.

The all-time leader in goals, assists and points in women's soccer history, Berthiaume recently finished her career as a four-time All-Little East Conference selection at forward for the Huskies. With 43 goals, 20 assists and 106 career points, Berthiaume helped lead USM to its first ever LEC regular season and tournament championship and berth into the NCAA Division III National Championship tournament.  Earning her undergraduate degree in English, Berthiaume is pursuing her Master's degree in Leadership Studies.

In addition to the lead sponsorship from Army ROTC, Gorham Savings Bank has generously sponsored the Wise banquet dinner as Husky Athletics welcomes its 224 scholar-athletes and families to enjoy the event.  Additionally, long-time Husky Athletics corporate sponsors Gorham House of Pizza, University Credit Union, GEICO Portland, Saco Bay Orthopaedic & Sports Physical Therapy, Yankee Ford, and Moody's Collision have given generous support in honoring the numerous Southern Maine student-athletes who have achieved academically during the 2021-2022 academic year.

Created during the 1987-1988 academic year, the William B. Wise Scholar-Athlete Award is named in honor of William B. Wise, a retired USM administrator and friend of athletics.  A graduate of the University of Maine, Wise came to USM in 1966 as assistant dean of academic affairs and director of the evening college.  In the ensuing years, he served the University tirelessly in a variety of roles, including acting dean of the College of Education, assistant to the vice president for academic affairs, executive assistant to the president, and executive assistant to the vice president for student affairs.

During the 2021-2022 academic year, 224 Huskies met or exceeded the criteria to receive Wise Scholar-Athlete recognition, and the Huskies' Athletic Department's nearly 450 student-athletes, representing 45 distinct academic majors, combined for a grade point average of 3.21.  To earn William B. Wise Scholar-Athlete accolades, a Southern Maine student-athlete must have a minimum of a 3.00 cumulative grade point average for the fall and spring semesters, be a full-time student both semesters, and be a member of varsity team for a full season.  Each of the Huskies' 22 intercollegiate programs has representation among the 224 student-athletes to be honored.

"The dedication and drive of our student-athletes to achieve at a high level both academically and athletically is truly something to be proud of as an Athletic Department and a University," said USM Director of Athletics Al Bean.  "With 224 student-athletes recognized as scholar-athletes, nearly 50 percent of our Huskies have done the work to earn a 3.0 or greater grade point average all while balancing the commitment of being a student-athlete, including travel, part-time jobs, family, internships, community service, and more. As a group, to hold a collective GPA of 3.21 is truly remarkable and is an incredible performance. I could not be more proud of the continued success, hard work and commitment by our student-athletes, coaches and staff members to continue to raise the bar academically and athletically."

Four University of Southern Maine Huskies will earn the William B. Wise Scholar-Athlete honor for a rare fifth or sixth time, including men's ice hockey's Maverick Lynes (English); women's ice hockey's Rylie Binette (Master's, Occupational Therapy), Shannon Colbert (Master's, Policy, Planning & Management) and women's basketball's Jackie Luckhardt (Master's, Leadership Studies).  Luckhardt, who is earning the award for an unprecedented sixth time, graduated in May and is currently a full-time women's basketball assistant coach at Bates College.  Lynes, a former captain for the Huskies, signed a professional contract with the Binghamton Black Bears of the Federal Prospects Hockey League.

An outstanding 22 student-athletes will be honored with their fourth Wise Award, including field hockey standout and team captain Samantha Ellis (Nursing) and wrestling's Jake Peavey (Business Management). Ellis, a two-time All-Little East Conference forward and former LEC Rookie of the Year, helped lead the Huskies to the program's first Little East Conference Regular Season Championship.  Peavey, captain of the Huskies' wrestling team, is a four-time National Wrestling Coaches' Association Scholar All-American, three-time All-Region wrestler and an NCAA Qualifier.

The Huskies' 22 student-athletes who have earned the academic honor for the fourth time represented a broad range of academic pursuits (11 in total) including Accounting, Art, Athletic Training, Business Management, Cyber Security, Health Sciences, Marketing, Nursing, Master's in Leadership Studies, Master's in Education and Sports Management.

Thirty-six Huskies are earning Wise accolades for the third time representing 16 different majors, including Accounting, Art History, Biology, Business Management, Communication,  Finance, Elementary Education, Environmental Science, Health Sciences, History, Marketing, Nursing, Recreation and Leisure Studies, Sports Management, Sociology, and Physics.  Among the 36 third-year recipients are volleyball's Sophie Lindsay (Athletic Training) and men's soccer's Ronan Hume (Nursing). Both Lindsay and Hume recently earned College Sports Communicators Academic All-District honors.  Lindsay just finished her career as a member of the volleyball team with the fourth-most assists in program history (2002) and became the fourth Husky to break the 2000 assist mark.  Hume a tenacious and skilled defender, Hume played and started in 16 games for the Huskies' this season, helping USM to 10 shutouts and a stingy 0.72 goals against average.  Playing in 49 career games, Hume has been a regular in the Huskies' starting lineup since the 2021 season, starting 38 games.

Sixty-one student-athlete are earning Wise Scholar Athlete honors for the second time, including two-sport (women's soccer, track & field) standout Catriona Gould (Biology) and men's basketball forward Marcus Christopher (Management).  Transferring from UMaine, Christopher played two seasons for the Huskies, and finished the 2021-2022 season as the team's second leading scorer and rebounder, and was selected to the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) Honors Court.

Finishing 2022 as the Little East Conference's leading scorer, Gould set the Huskies' single season record in goals scored and points while leading the women's soccer team to its first regular season and tournament LEC Championship. Named first team All-Conference, and was named the LEC's Offensive Player of the Year. Gould also earned All-LEC honors as a member of the Huskies' LEC Championship indoor and outdoor track & field teams.

Rounding out the 2022 Wise recipients are 101 first-time honorees including baseball's Arlo Pike (Psychology) and women's cross country's Olivia Mosca (History).  Named first team All-LEC as a designated hitter in 2022, Pike earned a spot on the D3baseball.com All-Region second team. Playing and starting in 40 games for the Huskies in the 2022 season, Pike led Southern Maine with a .345 batting average, collecting 48 hits in 139 at-bats.  With 11 doubles and seven home runs, 37.5 percent of Pike's hits went for extra bases for a 1.015 OPS and a .576 slugging percentage.

The 2021 Little East Conference Rookie of the Year, Mosca earned first team All-LEC honors as a freshman placing second overall in her first LEC Championship appearance.  Mosca's Rookie of the Year award in 2021 marked the first time a Husky women's cross country runner has earned award.

Along with the many individual achievements of USM student-athletes, two teams will receive the Remo Riciputi Award.  The Remo Riciputi, given annually to the team sport, and the individual team sport with the highest collective grade-point average, will be announced as part of the awards banquet.  Last year's winners, (2020-2021) of the Riciputi honor were the women's basketball and women's cross country team (individual team sport). Following the 2021-2022 academic year, 17 of the Huskies' 22 intercollegiate teams has at least a 3.0 combined grade point average, making the competition for the 2022 award a close one.
