GORHAM, ME – The University of Southern Maine men's cross country team will head to Boston, Mass. for the 2022 Little East Conference (LEC) Cross Country Championship race on Saturday, October 29th. The Huskies will look to claim their sixth consecutive LEC title.
Participating Programs: The Huskies will compete in a full LEC field consisting of Castleton University, Eastern Connecticut State University, Keene State College, Plymouth State University, Rhode Island College, UMass-Boston, UMass-Dartmouth, and Western Connecticut State University.
USM at the Little East Conference Championship: Since the inception of the LEC championship race, the Huskies have won eight league titles, their first coming in 2006 while most recently winning the past five conference championships (2016-21). Southern Maine has produced five individual champions: brothers Curtis Wheeler and Nick Wheeler in 2007 (25:06), Tyler Jasud in 2008 (25:41) and 2009 (26:06) and Yahya Nure in 2019 (25:20.28). At the 2021 event the Huskies won their fifth-consecutive championship thanks to All-Conference efforts from
Jordan Duplessie (Caribou, Maine) and
Cody Mathewson (Lebanon, Conn./ Lyman Memorial). Duplessie placed fourth to earn the conference's Rookie of the Year award and First Team All-LEC honors while Mathewson earned a spot of the All-LEC Second Team with a 12
th place finish.
Scouting the Huskies: The Huskies have competed in four races coming into the conference championships and most recently placed fourth at the Suffolk Invitational on October 15.
Time and Location: Saturday, October 29th at 12pm at Franklin Park.
Husky Spotlight: Mathewson and Duplessie have had good seasons for the Huskies. Mathewson was the top finisher for the Huskies at the UMass Dartmouth Invite on 9/17 with a time of 27:18.9 in the 8K. Duplessie placed 15
th in the 8K with a time of 26:12.7 at the Maine State Championships on 10/1 and finished 22
nd at the Suffolk University Invite with a time of 27:17.2.
Other Huskies who have been among the top finishers for the team include Freshman
Michael Cyr (Caribou, Maine), juniors
Jack Pecoraro (Westbrook, Maine) and
Scott Lightbody (Kennebunk, Maine) and sophomore
Anthony O'Donnell (Portland, Maine/Deering).
