GORHAM, Maine –  The first All-American in the history of the University of Southern Maine wrestling program, Michael Morin left his mark on the team and has continued to push the Huskies forward – first as a student-athlete and now has the program's head coach.  And with his induction into the 2022 New England Wrestling Association (NEWA) Hall of Fame, Morin is continuing to add to his lengthy list of accolades.
 
"As a student-athlete, and now as a head coach, Mike has represented the University of Southern Maine with distinction," noted Director of Athletics Al Bean.  "Mike's career as a Husky student-athlete was truly outstanding and helped establish Southern Maine wrestling as one of the best programs in the region and a national competitor. His character and dedication has shown through in his years as the head coach, and it is reflected in the success of his athletes on the mat, in the classroom and in the community.  He is very deserving of this honor."
 
Already a member of the Husky Hall of Fame and the Maine Amateur Wrestling Alliance Hall of Fame, Morin was a four-year starter for the Huskies. By the time Morin graduated from Southern Maine in 2010 with a degree in Business Administration, he was the program's only two-time All-American with a career record of 133-21, which was the most wins in USM history until Dan Del Gallo '17 eclipsed that record in 2017.  Morin coached Del Gallo to a NCAA National Championship title (149 lbs) in 2017.
 
A three-time NCAA All-Region champion winning the 165-pound title in 2008, 2009, and 2010, Morin earned three consecutive berths to the NCAA Division III National Championship – just the second Husky wrestler to earn a trip to the NCAA's pinnacle event, and the first grappler to earn multiple entries. 
 
As a junior in 2009, after claiming his second consecutive regional championship and berth to the NCAAs, Morin became the Huskies' first wrestling All-American placing fourth overall.  In his final season, Morin was ranked as the top wrestler in the country (at 165 pounds) for a majority of the season and successfully defended his regional championship repeating as an All-American placing fifth overall at the NCAA Division III Championship.  Morin completed his final season as a Husky with a remarkable record of 43-5.
 
Named the 2010 Pilgrim League Wrestler of the Year, Morin was a three-time Pilgrim League All-Star and a three-time William B. Wise Scholar-Athlete. He was twice selected to the NWCA Scholar All-American team.
 
 
Following his graduation, Morin returned to the Huskies' program as a volunteer assistant coach, earning 2014-2015 New England Wrestling Association (NEWA) Assistant Coach of the Year honors.  Morin then took over the Huskies' program during 2016-2017 season, and has continued to move the Southern Maine in the right direction.  Through the past six seasons, Morin has seen Huskies' wrestling crown its first individual National Champion, establish program-bests at the Regional Championship with individual and team accolades, and earning the program's first top 25 ranking (2017-2018 season).  Now in his seventh season, Morin has coached 25 regional place winners, seven NCAA Division III National Championship qualifiers, four NCAA Division III All-Americans and 13 National Wrestling Coaches' Association (NWCA) All-Americans.
 
Morin was inducted into the University of Southern Maine's Husky Hall of Fame in 2016 and the Maine Amateur Wrestling Alliance (MAWA) Hall of Fame in 2019.
