GORHAM, Maine – The University of Southern Maine women's ice hockey 16th-year head coach John Lauziere is proud to announce his leadership group for the 2021-22 campaign with returners, graduate student Rylie Binette (Milan, NH), graduate student Shannon Colbert (Manomet, MA), senior Brianna Doty (Lyndonville, VT) and junior Jordan Colbert (Manomet, MA) being chosen as team captains.
"I'm very excited about this group of captains," said Lauziere. "They bring a lot of passion for the game and excitement to the team. They all bring something different to the table as captains, and collectively they do an amazing job leading the team."
Binette, an occupational therapy major, is in her second season as a team captain. The forward finished her last full season with six goals and five assists for 11 total points across 27 games for the Huskies. In her career, she has tallied 19 markers, 19 assists for 38 points across 77 games. In the classroom, Binette was a three-time New England Hockey Conference (NEHC) All-Academic Team honoree as well as a two-time William B. Wise Scholar-Athlete.
Shannon Colbert is entering her fifth year as a member of the women's ice hockey program. A four-time captain, Colbert, a policy, planning, and management major started in all 27 games for the Huskies in 2019-20. She chipped in 13 total points (second on the team), a squad-best eight goals, and five assists while blocking a team-high 24 shots. In her career, Colbert has appeared in 85 games for the navy and gold totaling 17 goals and 17 assists for 34 points. In the classroom, Colbert is a three-time NEHC All-Academic Team athlete and was awarded the American Hockey Coaches Association (AHCA) All-American Scholars honor. She is also a two-time William B. Wise Scholar-Athlete.
Doty, a three-year defender enters her fourth season as a Husky. The nursing major earns captain honors for the second straight year. She appeared in all 27 games for USM in 2019-20 totaling three goals, six assists (second on the team) for nine points. She ranked fourth on the team in blocked shots with 13. Over her collegiate career, Doty has played in 59 career contests with six goals, 13 assists, and 19 points. In the classroom, she is a two-time NEHC All-Academic Team player and an AHCA All-American Scholar.
Jordan Colbert, an elementary education major enters her third season as Husky and the first as a team captain. In 2019-20, Colbert played in all 27 games amassing two goals, three assists for five points with eight blocked shots. Across 33 career contests, Colbert has two goals, five assists, and seven points as a defender. Colbert was named to the NEHC All-Academic Team in 2020-21 for the first time.
The Huskies will open their 2021-22 slate on Friday, October 29th with a non-conference contest on the road at the University of New England at 5:00 p.m. before playing their home opener on Saturday, October 30th at 1:00 p.m. against Endicott College.
