Men's Ice Hockey

Southern Maine Downs Johnson and Wales 6-3

Box Score

Kinsey and Green Each Score Two Goals

GORHAM, Maine -- Sophomores Bobby Kinsey (Leechburg, Pa.) and Michael Green (Baie d'Urfã, Quebec) each scored two goals as the University of Southern Maine Huskies doubled up on Johnson and Wales University for a 6-3 victory Friday night in a New England Hockey Conference men's game at the USM Ice Arena.

The victory snapped a three-game losing streak for the Huskies, and improved their mark to 6-12-3 overall and 5-7-2 in NEHC play.  The Wildcats, led by USM alum Eric Graham, slip to 4-16-0 overall and 1-12-0 in conference games.

Kinsey scored the only goal of a fast-paced first period, set up by sophomore Derek Tillotson (Bow, N.H.), to give the home side a 1-0 lead.

JWU sophomore Jake Glod (Cumberland, R.I.) tied the game at 2:41 of the second period with a 5-on-3 power-play goal.  Green restored the Huskies' lead with a power-play marker of his own at 6:18.

Heading into the third period with a one-goal lead, the Huskies increased their advantage to 4-1 in the first 11:04.  Senior Brock Padgham (Chilliwack, B.C.) finished off a 3-on-1 rush for a short-handed tally at 5:56, and rookie Curtis Judd (Saco, Maine) netted a power-play goal at 11:04 to give the Huskies a three-goal cushion.

The Wildcats took advantage of a power-play to cut the lead to two at 14:58 with senior Matt Bernot (Old Westbury, N.Y.) scoring the first of his two goals.  Bernot pulled the Wildcats within one at 16:32 with his eighth goal of the season.

After a USM timeout, Green deflated the Wildcats comeback bid at 17:22 when he whipped a 25-foot wrist shot into the lower right corner after an errant clearing pass hit a JWU defender and bounce right out to the second-year forward.

Kinsey added the final marker into an empty net with 48.5 seconds remaining.

USM sophomore Adam Withers (Kenora, Ont.) led all scorers picking up three assists.  Sophomore goalie Peter Ciccarelli (Chelmsford, Mass.) earned his first win of the season stopping 20 shots.  JWU junior Mike Rockwell (Poughquag, N.Y.) finished with 29 saves.  Southern Maine outshot JWU 35-23.

Southern Maine will play its final regular season home game tomorrow afternoon (4 pm.) hosting Suffolk University.  The Huskies will honor their seven seniors prior to the start of the game.  Johnson and Wales travels to New England College on Saturday (4 p.m.).
