GORHAM, Maine -- The visiting Emerson College Lions women's tennis team swept all six singles matches Sunday en route to an 8-1 win over the University of Southern Maine Huskies in a non-conference match played at the Gorham High School courts.

The Lions, under the direction of former USM coach Aaron Bergeron, improve to 2-0 on the season.  The Huskies, playing for the third day in a row, slide to 1-7 overall.

Senior Gabby Brooks (Palermo, Maine/Messalonskee) and sophomore Ciara Richards (Caribou, Maine) provided the Huskies with their lone point of the match with an 8-1 win over junior Cassia Burns (Tewksbury, Mass.) and Angelica Ao (Chongqing, China) in the number three doubles match.

Sophomores Eliana Flores-Barber (Long Beach, Calif.) and Annie Woodbury (Salinas, Calif.) combined at the top of the ladder for three points.  The duo posted an 8-3 win over the USM combination of senior Samantha Harden (Turner, Maine/Leavitt Area) and sophomore Emma Nassif (Saco, Maine/Thornton Academy) at number doubles.

Flores-Barber came back to defeat Harden in a super tiebreaker for a 3-6, 6-3 (11-9) win at number one singles.  Woodbury knocked off Nassif in straight sets at number two.

Sophomore Thea Nagle (Mechanicsburg, Penn.) and freshman Sophie Oglensky (West Long Branch, N.J.) matched Flores-Barber and Woodbury taking three points with an 8-3 win over freshman Regina Harmon (Palermo, Maine/Erskine Academy) and senior Eden Martin (South Portland, Maine) at number two doubles, and straight-set wins over Harmon and Brooks in the number three and four singles matches.

Burns and Ao won their respective singles matches to give the Lions a sweep of the singles play.

Southern Maine returns to Little East Conference play on Wednesday (4 p.m.) traveling to Plymouth State University.  The match will be played at Holderness School in Holderness, N.H.  Emerson is scheduled to host Worcester State University on Friday (tba).
