Aaron Bergeron has been named the head coach of the University ofSouthern Maine Huskies men’s and women’s tennis teamsfor the 2013-2014 seasons. Bergeron replaces Ron Chicoine whoresigned this summer after leading both programs for the past fourseasons.
A 2012 graduate of Stonehill College with a bachelor of arts inpsychology, Bergeron was a five-time All-Northeast-10 performer forthe Skyhawks. In singles play, Bergeron compiled a 56-16record over his four-year career, and a 45-25 in doublesplay. Stonehill reached the semifinals of the NE-10tournament in all four seasons (2009-2012), and received NCAAtournament bids in 2009 and 2010.
“Aaron has a strong tennis background and is familiar withboth of our men’s and women’s tennis programs,”noted Al Bean, Director of Athletics at USM. “Hisexperience as the two teams assistant coach over the past year willmake his transition seamless for the student-athletes.”
Bergeron has ties to the local communities, serving as the Directorof Tennis Operation for the Goose Rocks Beach Association since2008, including such duties as coordinating multi-level clinics,private instruction and junior instructor education. Beginning in 2012, Bergeron was named the Gorham Middle School headtennis coach as well as serving as the Huskies’ assistantcoach for both the men’s and women’s tennis programs.As the Huskies’ assistant, Bergeron assisted in playerdevelopment, match psychology and strategy, and student-athleterecruitment.
“I’m excited to have the opportunity to join thecoaching staff at the University of Southern Maine,” saidBergeron. “Being a Gorham resident, I have always beena fan of the institution and have been aware of its strong athletictradition. I’m looking forward to helping the USMstudent-athletes excel at the sport I love.
“Replacing Ron Chicoine is no easy task as he laid thegroundwork for the Huskies’ improvement, but I was luckyenough to be his assistant and learned many invaluablelessons. Heading into the season, our goal will be to improveupon last year’s record and to advance further in the LittleEast Conference playoffs.”
Bergeron, who will also serve as the head tennis coach for theGorham High School Girls’ team beginning this season.
