CASTLETON, Vermont – Tatum Shappy scored twice in the opening three minutes to highlight a 5-0 win for the Castleton University Spartans over the University of Southern Maine Huskies in a Little East Conference women's soccer game Saturday afternoon at Dave Wolk Stadium.
With the loss, Southern Maine dips below .500 to 4-5-1 overall and is 0-2 in the Little East. The Huskies are 2-3-1 on the road this season. Castleton improves to 5-4 overall and 2-1 in conference play. The Spartans are 3-1 at home.
ON THE PITCH:
Shappy scored her third and fourth goals of the season in a matter of minutes scoring 1:58 into the contest and then again at the three minute mark to stake the Spartans a 2-0 lead. Both of Shappy's goals were unassisted.
Castleton added two more goals before the halftime break to hold a commanding 4-0 lead. Rylee Nichols slotted in a goal off of an assist from Makenzi Bellando in the 14th minute, before the Huskies had a misplay in the 33rd for an own goal.
In the second half, Bellando and Nichols switched roles with Bellando netting her fourth goal of the season in the 59th minute for the 5-0 final.
THE GOALKEEPERS:
Loren Henderson made eight saves for the Spartans to earn the shutout victory. USM freshman Kayla Gorman (Windham, Maine) played 77:33 making three saves and allowing all five goals. Chantel Gagnon played the final 12:27. She did not make a save or see a shot on goal.
INSIDE THE STATS:
Statistically the two teams were fairly even. Castleton had a 15-13 advantage in shots, and both teams had eight shots on goal. USM led in corner kicks 6-3.
UP NEXT:
Southern Maine hosts Plymouth State in a Little East Conference game on Wednesday (7:00 pm) under the lights at Hannaford Field.
