Women’s Soccer Team Clinches Fourth Straight Conference Title, Advances to NCAA Tournament

On Saturday, November 8, the University of Southern Maine's women's soccer team secured its  fourth consecutive Little East Conference (LEC) championship title. The 3-0 victory over Western Connecticut State University in the championship game, marked an unprecedented achievement for the senior class and the program's growing legacy.

The Huskies' 2022 victory was a first for the program – USM's women's soccer team had never won the LEC championship before, and the then-freshmen made it their mission to defend and repeat that success throughout their time at USM.

Senior forward and co-captain Riley Reitchel of Palermo, Maine said, "In 2022, we set a goal to make a difference in this conference – and we haven't taken our eyes off that goal since."

Since then, the Huskies have faced the WestConn Wolves in each championship, defeating them 3-1 in 2022 and then recording 3-0 shutouts in 2023, 2024 and 2025. This streak is a testament to the hard work, resilience, and determination of the entire team – especially the senior class, whose leadership has guided the Huskies through an exceptionally challenging season.

"Many of the players responsible for the first three championships have graduated, and the transition from 2024 to 2025 saw a turnover of no fewer than 14 key players, including two veteran goalkeepers – one an All-American," said head coach Martyn Keen. "Without a doubt, this win has been the most rewarding."

Riding a five-game winning streak and outscoring opponents 18-5, the team heads into the NCAA Division III National Tournament with energy and determination. They will face nationally ranked No. 4 Messiah University in Grantham, Pennsylvania, on Saturday, November 15 at 11 a.m. at Shoemaker Field. READ MORE
