Poratti (2 goals, 1 assist) Leads Wentworth Past USM 3-1

GORHAM, Maine  –  Senior Jess Poratti had two goals and added an assist to lead the Wentworth Leopards to a 3-1 win over the University of Southern Maine Huskies 3-1 in a non-conference women's soccer game Wednesday afternoon at Hannaford Field. 

With the win, Wentworth improves to 4-5 overall.  Southern Maine evens out to 4-4-1 with the loss.  Wentworth leads the two-game series between the schools 2-0.  

ON THE PITCH

Scoring in the 33rd minute Poratti took a through ball on the left side of the field and slotted it into the back of the net for her third goal of the season and a 1-0 WIT lead.  Freshman Macy Paquin (Somerset, Mass.) assisted on the play.  

WIT's lead held through the half and Poratti doubled her team's advantage in the 58th minute on a strong individual effort in the box, cutting twice to free space before hitting for another far post goal. 

USM cut its deficit to a single goal in the 77th minute.  Sophomore Alex Allain (Carmel, Maine/Hermon) headed in her third goal of the season after a well-placed free kick service into the box from senior Emma Dennison (South Portland, Maine). 

The Leopards quickly regained their two-goal advantage scoring in the 81st for the 3-1 final.  Sophomore Ashley Molnar (Northridge, Calif./Chaminade) scored her first goal of the season from the top of the 18 after Poratti sent a centering pass from the right side for the assist. 

THE GOALKEEPERS: 

WIT junior goalkeeper Allison Haynes (Shelton, Conn./Lauralton Hall) made three saves in the win.  USM freshman goalkeeper Kayla Gorman (Windham, Maine) made several key decisions off of her line, but did not record a save in the loss. 

INSIDE THE STATS: 

Southern Maine outshot WIT 8-7; however, WIT had a 5-3 lead in the first half for shots.  USM outshot the Leopards 5-2 in the second half. In corner kicks, WIT had a decisive 6-1 advantage. 

Allain had a near-goal rocketing a shot off the far post in the opening minutes of the game.

UP NEXT: 

Southern Maine returns to Little East Conference action on Saturday (11:30 am) traveling to Castleton University.
