Southern Maine Comes Back to Down Colby-Sawyer 3-1

            GORHAM, Maine -- Junior Megan Gettings (Bristol, Conn./Bristol Eastern) and sophomore Kacey Foerster (Scarborough, Maine) combined for 27 kills as the University of Southern Maine Huskies rallied from a set down to defeat the visiting Colby-Sawyer College Chargers 3-1 (24-26. 25-23, 25-22, 25-14) in a non-conference women's volleyball match Thursday evening at the Warren Hill Gymnasium.

            The win lifts the Huskies' overall record to 14-9.  The Chargers had their four-match winning streak snapped by the loss and fall to 16-9 overall.

            Gettings finished with a season-high 14 kills and a .462 attack percentage (14-2-26) while Foerster had 13 kills on a .258 attack percentage (13-5-31).  Senior Nicole Schmitz (St. Paul, Minn./Cretin-Derham) added seven kills to go along with 32 assists.  Rookie Sophie Lindsay (Sierra Madre, Calif.) had 10 assists, and sophomore libero Lauren Delissio (Hebron, Conn./RHAM) led the Huskies with 16 digs.  Rookie middle hitter Alexis Dow (Miami, Fla./Saint Brendan) chipped in with five kills and five blocks.

            Senior Courtney Murray (Quincy, Mass./Norfolk Agriculture) led the Chargers' attack with 14 kills.  Rookie Maddie Bromley (Truckee, Calif.) had a double-double with 13 kills and 10 digs.  Rookie Katarina Hornung (Stratton, Colo.) and junior Naarah Cox (Boston, Mass./Newton North) had nine kills apiece.  First-year setter Anna Allen (Los Angeles, Calif.) dished out 48 assists, and junior libero Morgan Flynn (Reading, Mass.) led all players with 19 digs. 

            The teams battled through a nip-and-tuck first set before a Bromley kill snapped a 24-24 tie and a USM attack error gave the Chargers the opening set.  In the second set, USM built a 21-15 lead with a 7-1 run, then held off a Chargers comeback bid that was aided by three straight USM attack errors.

            In the pivotal third set, USM rallied from a three-point deficit (20-17) with an 8-2 run to take the set and go up 2-1.  In the final set, USM opened an early seven-point lead (10-3) and never looked back as CSC got no closer than five points on three occasions, the last time at 14-9.

            Southern Maine is back in action on Saturday (12 p.m.) hosting a tri-match with Western Connecticut State University and Colby College.  Colby-Sawyer travels to Boston to play at Emmanuel College on Saturday (2 p.m.).
