Salem State Downs Southern Maine 7-2

SALEM, Mass. -- The Salem State University Vikings swept the three doubles matches to propel the Vikings to a 7-2 victory over the University of Southern Maine Huskies in a Little East Conference match played Saturday.

The win snapped a nine-match losing skid for the Vikings who conclude their season 2-10 overall and 1-7 in LEC play.  The Huskies finished their season 2-8 overall and winless in eight LEC matches.  Neither team will advance to the six-team Little East Conference championship tournament that begins Tuesday.

Sophomores Ashley Owens (Penn Yan, N.Y.) and Gabby Brooks (Palermo, Maine/Messalonskee) earned the Huskies' two points with wins in singles play.  Owens took a 6-2, 6-1 victory over sophomore Meredith Macdonald (Lynn, Mass.) in the #3 singles match, while Brooks prevailed in the super tiebreaker over rookie Alexis Alli (Beverly, Mass.) for a 6-3, 3-6 (12-10) win in the #6 match.

The Vikings grabbed a 3-0 lead after the doubles matches were concluded.  Senior Madeline Allaire (Columbus, Ohio) and Macdonald combined with an 8-2 win over junior Courtney Jordan (Portland, Maine/Westbrook) and Owens in the #1 match.  Alli and senior Ann Spence (Attleboro, Mass.) took an 8-5 win in the #2 match against junior Margaret Smith (Farmingdale, Maine/Gardiner Area) and senior Rikki Demoranville (Madawaska, Maine).  Senior Cassie Morrison (Clinton, Mass.) and junior Kristin Klimowicz (Ipswich, Mass.) took an 8-2 win over Brooks and junior Joanna Scheidegger (Lyss, Switzerland) at #3.

Allaire, Spence, Morrison and Klimowicz also had wins in singles matches for the Vikings.
